Buccaneers Reportedly Interested In Former Defensive Player of the Year

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers had a full representation at the NFL Combine this year. The annual event offers NFL scouts, coaches, and executives a chance to assess potential draft picks based on their physical skills, personal qualities, and character.

Beyond the on-field evaluations, another crucial aspect of the NFL Combine often flies under the radar: networking. With all 32 teams gathered in one place, the event presents a unique opportunity for informal discussions and deal-making between team executives, player agents, and athletes themselves.

These conversations aren’t limited to draft prospects, either. With NFL free agency looming, the Combine provides a valuable chance for teams to connect with free agents they’re interested in.

ESPN recently released an article highlighting the latest buzz from the NFL Combine in Indianapolis, including insider information on the upcoming free agency period.

According to ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler and NFL insider Dan Graziano, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers are showing interest in acquiring 5x All-Pro and former NFL Defensive Player of the Year Khalil Mack.

“Teams agree edge rusher Khalil Mack played lights out last season, and the only real concern with his free agency is age (he’s 34). A few people I’ve talked to have made potential connections to the Buccaneers and Bears. Tampa Bay typically doesn’t spend big on external free agents but is looking for pass-rush help.”

Even with his age, Khalil Mack remains a dominant force off the edge, evident in his 17 sacks for the Los Angeles Chargers in 2023. For the Buccaneers, who urgently need to boost their pass rush, adding Mack would bring a significant surge in productivity from the outside linebacker position. Moreover, his veteran presence would provide invaluable leadership and mentorship to younger players like Yaya Diaby and Chris Braswell.

Signing a proven edge rusher like Khalil Mack in free agency would give Jason Licht and the Buccaneers’ front office more flexibility heading into the draft. With their most pressing positional need already addressed, they could shift their focus to other defensive areas or adopt a “best player available” approach, without feeling pressured to target an edge rusher in the early rounds.

The BR Rub

We’ve been talking about the Buccaneers needing to target Khalil Mack for awhile now on our live stream, “The Aftermath”. Mack, while a bit long in the tooth still has value. His sack totals and QB pressures are still strong, and his veteran presence is much needed. This could be a huge get for Jason Licht and company.
