With a wealth of NFL experience under his belt, Tampa Bay Buccaneers head coach Todd Bowles has built a reputation for delivering results. Despite facing criticism from some, his impressive tenure with the Buccaneers speaks for itself: three consecutive NFC South titles and playoff appearances. Those who know him best – the coaches who have worked alongside him – can attest to his effective leadership and the many things he’s getting right.

One coach who can attest to Todd Bowles’ leadership is Liam Coen, who oversaw the Buccaneers’ top-five offense during his single season in Tampa Bay in 2024. Although Coen’s departure to become the Jacksonville Jaguars’ head coach was marred by controversy, it appears that both parties have moved past the drama. Coen has since spoken highly of his former boss, sharing praise for Bowles’ guidance during his time with the Buccaneers.

In a recent appearance on the Pardon My Take podcast, Liam Coen shared his insights on various topics, including his experience working with Todd Bowles. When asked about Bowles’ reputation for aggressive blitzing as a defensive coordinator, Coen confirmed that Bowles indeed has a penchant for blitzing. However, Coen also highlighted a key trait that sets Bowles apart: his ability to adapt and adjust his strategy, making him a formidable coach.

“I felt like it was just a barrage [of blitzes] in training camp, but you don’t know where it’s coming from. He’s so multiple that way. I’ve never seen somebody in the second half of games adjust in 10 minutes,” Coen stated. “Todd Bowles had an ability in the second half of games to take what they were doing and almost be like, ‘We’re gonna do this,’ and kinda shut people down. I’d never really seen that before.”

Coen’s admiration for Todd Bowles is clear, and it’s evident that he benefited greatly from their time together in Tampa Bay. Bowles’ complex defensive scheme demands a high level of adaptability, making his ability to adjust to opposing offenses all the more impressive. This talent has been a hallmark of Bowles’ enduring success as a defensive expert in the NFL, and it continues to serve him well in his coaching career.

As the 2025 season approaches, Liam Coen will focus on revitalizing the Jacksonville Jaguars after a disappointing 2024 campaign. Meanwhile, Todd Bowles will aim to extend his impressive run of NFC South division titles and build on that success with a deeper playoff push.
