The Tampa Bay Buccaneers are starting the process of making moves to form their 2025 roster. With free agency starting this week, expect several moves by the team. Not just your typical roster signings, but moves that are essentially for monetary restructuring reasons.
Case in point, according to Greg Auman of FOX Sports, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers will not extend a tender offer to restricted free agent linebacker J.J. Russell. As a result, Russell will become an unrestricted free agent when the new league year begins next week.
“The Bucs are not tendering restricted free agent linebacker J.J. Russell, making him an unrestricted free agent. Could bring him back for less than the $3.2 million low tender — had 33 tackles in 2024, giving him 49 in three years since making the team undrafted out of Memphis.”
Although Russell will become an unrestricted free agent, Greg Auman notes that the Buccaneers can still consider re-signing him at a lower salary, potentially below the $3.2 million value of the low-round tender.
Russell, 26, went undrafted out of Memphis in 2021 before signing a three-year rookie deal with the Buccaneers. Since then, he has experienced a series of transactions, being shuffled on and off the team’s roster.
Last season, J.J. Russell saw significant action for the Buccaneers, playing in all 16 games with three starts. He accumulated 33 tackles, recovered a fumble, and defensed two passes.
