Buccaneers Sign Veteran Offensive Tackle

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers, who boasted one of the NFL’s top offenses last season, have maintained continuity by retaining nearly their entire starting lineup. This unit averaged an impressive 29.5 points per game.

In a significant move, the Buccaneers are adding a fresh face to their offense for the first time this 2025 free agency period.

The Buccaneers made a key addition to their offense on Thursday, agreeing to a one-year deal with veteran offensive tackle Charlie Heck, formerly of the San Francisco 49ers, as reported by ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler. Heck effectively replaces swing tackle Justin Skule, who signed with the Minnesota Vikings.

Heck saw significant action with the 49ers late last season, starting two games after being signed off Arizona’s practice squad. However, his 2024 campaign was marked by a career-low 41.2 overall PFF grade across seven appearances with San Francisco and Arizona. The Buccaneers are counting on Heck to rebound in 2025.

With Tristan Wirfs and Luke Goedeke solidified as the starting offensive tackles, the Buccaneers have bolstered their depth by adding Heck. The move provides a crucial insurance policy for quarterback Baker Mayfield, considering both Wirfs and Goedeke missed time due to injuries in 2024. Heck’s presence offers valuable protection against potential setbacks.

A fourth-round pick by the Houston Texans in the 2020 NFL Draft, Heck spent four seasons with the team, accumulating 41 appearances and 21 starts. His most notable campaign came in 2021, when he started a career-high 15 games and earned a respectable 72.4 pass-blocking grade.

Following his release by the Texans ahead of the 2024 season, Heck went on to suit up for the Cardinals and 49ers.

A talented tackle with a strong football pedigree, Heck is the son of Andy Heck, the Kansas City Chiefs’ longtime offensive line coach. The 28-year-old developed his skills playing both tackle positions during a standout collegiate career at the University of North Carolina.
