In a recent NFL Network interview, Watson shared the story behind his decision to join the Buccaneers. Revealing his excitement to learn from defensive tackle Vita Vea and bring his skills to the Bucs’ interior defense.
“I looked at it as being able to get the most out of my potential there,” Watson stated. “Like you all said, they have a vet (Vea) there that I feel like I’ve tried to model my game after. He does it successfully and I feel like that’s a person I can look up to and learn a lot from. So I think that was the best option for me.”
Watson’s size and style aren’t suited for a pass-rushing role. But he excels at plugging gaps against the run. Even if he doesn’t crack the active roster, he could be a valuable depth piece or practice squad contributor, bringing a specific skillset to the table.
Desmond Watson is a massive presence on the field, often drawing double teams, but his impact is largely limited to plays that come straight at him. After reportedly shedding nearly 30 pounds from his 464-pound frame, Watson’s working to get in shape, hoping to turn his career trajectory around.
If Watson can continue to lose weight and reach a size that showcases his athleticism, he has the potential to develop into a solid defensive lineman with some time and growth.
