Tampa Bay Buccaneers safety Shilo Sanders knows his fate hangs in the balance as he prepares for the team’s preseason finale against the Buffalo Bills on Saturday night. This game is his last chance to convince coaches that he deserves a spot on the 53-man roster.
After spending six seasons playing college football, Sanders took a leap of faith by signing with the Buccaneers as an undrafted free agent in April. Despite the long odds, he’s framed his journey as an underdog story, determined to prove himself.
According to Jenna Laine of ESPN, Sanders described his journey this summer as an “underdog story.”
“This is an underdog story,” Sanders stated. “Everyone’s seen how everything played out, and it is just relatable. People go through things, and you got to fight through it to come out on top. So I feel like a lot of people could relate to me.”
Buccaneers head coach Todd Bowles recently discussed the safety position, highlighting a competitive battle for the No. 4 spot. Shilo Sanders, Kaevon Merriweather, and Rashad Wisdom are vying for the position, each bringing unique strengths.
Saturday’s game is crucial for Sanders.
“Shilo’s very aggressive, very young, very hungry,” Bowles said. “He can make plays in the box and we know he can run down and give us 100% on special teams, so this last week is going to be very important for those guys to show up.”
Sanders’ journey won’t end even if he doesn’t make the 53-man roster cut. He’s demonstrated he belongs in the league, and a spot on the practice squad could be his next stepping stone. As the season unfolds and injuries inevitably occur, Sanders will likely get opportunities to join the active roster for games.
