Todd Bowles Gives Insight into Desmond Watson’s Status with Buccaneers

Tampa Bay Buccaneers Head Coach Todd Bowles explained that the team parted ways with undrafted defensive tackle Desmond Watson due to his weight issues. Watson spent the entire training camp on the active/non-football illness list as the team worked with him to reduce his weight, which had raised health concerns. Despite showing flashes of potential at OTAs and rookie minicamp, Watson’s weight was a major factor in the team’s decision.

“The door is not closed on him but if you don’t practice you’re probably not going to make this team and then we’ll see where we are in a couple of weeks and we’ll circle back and then we’ll go from there.” Bowles said via ESPN’s Jenna Laine.

Watson had been working tirelessly with a nutritionist and conditioning coach throughout training camp in an effort to shed pounds from his 449-pound frame.

“He has been working hard.” Bowles said of Watson via ESPN’s Jenna Laine. “I think he’s going to continue to work hard, and we had a long talk and we had good communication and we’ll circle back and see where he is at.”
