The lights will be shining bright on the Tampa Bay Buccaneers this week. They will be on Monday Night Football as they travel to Houston to play the Texans. It’s a primetime clash between two teams that most expect to be in the playoffs.
With these being two really good teams, obviously they each have really good players. This sets up a good matchup between stars that will go head to head in this game. Whoever wins this individual battle could spell victory for their team.
X marks the spot! Here is my X-Factor matchup between the Bucs and Texans.
Mike Evans vs Derek Stingley
Stingley is one of the best cornerbacks in the NFL. He is not only coming off a pro bowl season, but he was voted first team all pro last year. Now entering his 4th season, he is looking to maintain the level he reached last year.
As the 3rd overall pick in the 2022 NFL draft, this was always the expectation for Derek Stingley. The 6’1 and 195 lbs corner was a star at LSU for several years before entering the league. He has all the talent in the world and is a true lockdown corner who is expected to beat the best that the NFL has to offer.
Enter Mike Evans. Now in his 12th season, Evans has established himself as a future Hall of Famer. He is on the short list of greatest wide receivers to ever play the game and is still playing at a very high level.Â
Evans’ combination of size (6’5 and 230+ lbs), route running and build up speed down the field make him a challenge for even the best cornerbacks. Stingley should be no exception. This will be the first time we get to see this battle because Stingley was out the last time these two teams played and Evans went for 87 yards in Houston in 2023, so we will see how this plays out.Â
Also consider that it is unlikely that Stingley will be left one on one with Evans most of this game. Evans is one of the best in the game today at taking advantage of man to man coverage when he is left on an island. Expect a safety to shade over the top whenever possible.
These are two players who I would consider as top five players at their respective positions. This sets up for a prime time battle within the prime time game. I will have my eyes on these two all night.

However, this battle will also send ripples throughout the rest of the game. With Stingley covering Evans, it means the Texans best secondary player and the Bucs best receiver will be occupying each other all game. Other players will have to step up for a more featured role.
It will be a good opportunity for rookie Emeka Egbuka to continue to make his mark for the Buccaneers. He will also get a good opponent in the likes of Jalen Pitre or CJ Gardner-Johnson or Kamari Lassiter. Egbuka beating these supporting players in the secondary will be critical for a Bucs victory.
These are the kinds of matchups that make for classic games. Super stars going against each other on the big stage. No matter what the outcome, this will be the highest level of football that the NFL has to offer.
