The Tampa Bay Buccaneers defeated the Houston Texans 20-19 to start the season 2-0. That can only mean it’s time for Carter Brantley’s “Captain’s Table/Walk the Plank” column. Enjoy, and Raise The Flags!
Captain’s Table:
Baker Freaking Mayfield
Baker Mayfield man. What a ballsy player. He gets hurt, hears CJGJ talking some mess, and immediately gets up to respond. That’s some insane stuff. Then he goes out and has the balls to scramble for a 1st down on 4th and 10 in a gotta-have-it situation. And continues to fire bullets to set up a Mr. White game winning tuddy.
Mr. White
Mr. White! It’s time to cook again! He ran for over 60 yards and had over 6 yards per carry. Bucky was great, too, and we’ll get to him, but by all accounts Mr. White was left for dead. Bucky took his spot. It’s a free agency year, and Rachaad White is just a 3rd down specialist. But for one game, the Bucs needed him, and by golly he delivered.
Bucky Irving
This is more of the Bucky Irving we expected; a solid runner who can contribute in the passing game, too. He was great in both areas.
Josh Grizzard
He was cooking Monday night, putting together a solid plan to attack a very good defense despite being down both starting tackles by the end of the game and 2 starting wideouts from the jump. Great stuff.
Walk the Plank
Chase McLaughlin
He… might be cooked. I’d imagine they’ll give him at least a game or 2 to figure it out, but things look brutal for the veteran kicker. He missed another one Monday night after missing 2 in their opener, and it could’ve really cost the Bucs. Luckily they’re 2-0 so he’s not AS big of a story, but he’s been a dark cloud around an otherwise fun team.
Buccaneers Defense (Turnovers)
I know the defense was fine Monday Night. Maybe even kinda decent. Going on the road and holding a team under 20 is solid. But man. Still no turnovers. That’s gotta change if the Bucs want to be more than the cute little NFC South champs.
Special Teams
A blocked punt? Allowing a 53-yard punt return? I’m sorry, I don’t care about the Josh Hayes no call block in the back, that cannot happen, period end of story. That’s something that needs to be cleaned up, like tomorrow. It’ll slide against the Texans, but playing contenders? That’s what gets you knocked outta the playoffs.
