Buccaneers’ Quarterback Baker Mayfield has had a meteroric comeback from being a scout teamer for the Carolina Panthers to the unquestioned leader of the Buccaneers. If he hadn’t led the Rams to a prime time win after only a few days on the team, he may not have been given this opportunity with the Bucs. Timing was on his side no doubt about it.
However, the timing I’m referring to now is the amount of time he has in the pocket as he plays behind a banged up offensive line and without his best WR in Mike Evans.
When you look at the amount of shuffling that’s had to happen, it’s amazing what they’ve been able accomplish. Bakers familiarity with his teammates and system has allowed him to make the proper reads and put his teammates in the best position to succeed. That only comes with experience.
When you watch the game this week, try to count how long it takes him to get the ball out of his hands. It’s something I’ve paid even more attention to lately.
If he has 2.5 to 3 seconds then he will be able to find the open guy. Anything less and it will be tough to move the ball against a very good Eagles front.
The Baker we are seeing now is decisive. He trusts his teammates to be in the right place. Even without Evans I’m confident that he will get the job done.
The expected return of Tristan Wirfs to LT and Chris Godwin at WR will give the team a boost. I’m expecting another close one so I have my full supply of stomach medicine.
