Greg’s Quick Hits: Eagles 31 Buccaneers 25

After reaching for the antacids during the previous three Buccaneers’ games I thought that I’d get a reprieve after that first half with Bucs trailing 24 to 6. Oh, but these are not your father’s Buccaneers.

When I look at the standings, I see a column for Win, Losses and even Ties. What I don’t see is one called moral victories. That being said, the Bucs showed that they are a team that will continue to fight even against all odds.

Health plays such a huge factor in the NFL and while no HC will EVER make excuses, we as fans have the luxury to see what’s really happening. The right side of the Offensive Line is bordering on ridiculous. It’s easy to pick apart the gameplan but when you’re only able to be confident on one side of the line, it affects everything.
Also, when one unit is hurting, the other TWO need to step up. The not so special teams unit has been killing this team. The Bucs were able to somehow overcome their abysmal play in their 3 wins but yesterday was too much to overcome.
Is there anything more deflating, in all of sports, then either a blocked FG or punt that is returned for a TD? We’ve seen it happen in back to back weeks. The punt/FG is a play that I usually think about what happened on the series of downs that caused the team to punt or try a FG. Now my main concern is if the protection is going to hold. Totally unacceptable.

So here they sit at 3-1. Not a bad record. I had hoped for 2 and 2 and that was before the Evans injury. Godwin will need a few more games to really get going but it was encouraging to see both him and Wirfs back in the lineup. They need to make some tough decisions with regards to their special teams and right side of their Offensive Line before they travel to Seattle.
One thing I KNOW for sure is that they will fight until the end. That’s a great thing to say about any team you root for.

Of all the NFL teams that I could follow, why did I choose the Tampa Bay Buccaneers? It was 1979, I was an impressionable 12-year-old living in Canada. At that time, getting any NFL coverage was tough enough but that was reserved for the elite teams like the Cowboys, Steelers etc. I watched one game at 1 PM and one game at 4 PM. That was it. No Redzone, no night games on Sunday Each Christmas my family would drive from Montreal to visit my aunt in Jacksonville. I remember seeing the Bucs playing on TV against the Falcons when I was there. I saw something that day that changed my fandom forever. There was a QB wearing number 12, in an orange jersey and he wasn’t white! As a minority myself, seeing a non-white QB was something that immediately I was drawn to. I knew that this was the team, and this was the guy who I would follow. The years between 1979 and 1997 were obviously difficult but my fandom never wavered. If anything, it made me stronger as a person. I’ve often joked that I’ve had 3 wives but only ONE football team. I was asked if I wanted to write the occasional article for Bucs Report. Talking and writing about the Bucs is a full-time hobby so of course my answer was YES. I’m 56, retired and living in Costa Rica now. I sport 4 Buc tattoos and have been fortunate to make many visits to Tampa to watch the Bucs. I’ve made countless friends and even more memories. I look forward to chatting and interacting with the many Buccaneer fans throughout the world. Go Bucs Greg D’Cruz
