The Tampa Bay Buccaneers couldn’t keep up with the Detroit Lions. The Pewter Pirates fall 24-9 on Monday Night Football and are now 5-2 on the season.
That can only mean it’s time for Carter Brantley’s weekly article “Captain’s Table – Walk the Plank”. Enjoy!
Walk the Plank:
Baker Mayfield!
He looked atrocious Monday night. He’s been the MVP up to this point, but as well as he’s played through the first six games of the season, he played about as poorly as you can Monday night. The Lions were running out an entire back up secondary and the Bucs managed only a little over 50 yards of offense in the first half. Obviously Detroit defensive line is quite good and the Buccaneers offensive line is quite banged up, but Baker missed some very easy throws. The Tez Johnson miss towards the end of the fourth quarter was especially brutal. The interception was also a pretty gnarly pass.
SirVocea Dennis!
He has to figure something out soon. The second linebacker position has been his all year and Tampa Tampa Bay still has yet to see a replacement, but that could very well change very soon, especially if he continues to play the way he has been. He’s been really rough to watch. It’s disappointing that the Buccaneers cannot seem to figure out the linebacker position especially with Lavonte David likely to retire anytime.
The Officials!
This is not meant to target the referees because I know they’re only part timers. And the calls were going mostly the Buccaneers way, so it’s not an excuse as to why they lost either. But it was another rough night on a nationally televised game. A lot of missed calls in the Buccaneers favor, but the review of the K Otten catch was an abysmal display of incompetence. If that’s truly how things are supposed to work then the system is broken and needs to be fixed. Getting a second look in a review is absolutely bonkers. The NFL clearly has no incentive to improve these things so the beatings will continue until morale approves so to speak. Still incredibly frustrating to watch take place.
Injuries!
This goes for both teams, but having to watch two incredibly banged up teams was kind of a bummer because otherwise these teams are truly incredibly talented and some of the best players in football when everyone’s healthy. The game is still entertaining, but imagine how good it would’ve been if both teams actually had even close to a full strength squad.
Captain’s Table:
Tez Johnson!
Another fun touchdown for the former Oregon Duck it was the lone highlight for otherwise a noteworthy performance for this Buccaneer offense. Tez has stepped up when the Buccaneers have needed it most. Mike Evans unfortunately went down very early in this game and Emeka can’t do everything himself.
The Defense!
It may not have seemed like it with the high yardage total, especially in that first half, but the Buccaneers defense managed to submit a very good performance against a high-powered Lions offense.
