The Tampa Bay Buccaneers improved to 6-2 on the season after defeating the New Orleans Saints 23-3. The Pewter Pirates sit atop the NFC, and NFC South heading into their bye week. That can only mean it’s time for Carter Brantley’s weekly article, Captain’s Table – Walk the Plank!
Captain’s Table:
Jamel Dean!
A forced fumble only a couple weeks after an NFC Defensive Player of the Week nomination? Really excellent stuff. Dean’s been the subject of much criticism over his tenure in a Bucs uniform, some deserved, some not, but he’s been an absolute monster so far this season in a walk year. If the Bucs let him go it’d be understandable at his age and potential price point, but he’s been a big part of their 6-2 start.
Antoine Winfield, Jr.!
There’s a case to be made that AWJ could’ve ended up with 3 defensive TDs Sunday. He was excellent, proving that last year was just a blip in what will otherwise hopefully be a long, successful career as a Bucs safety. Him and LVD could be this generation’s Brooks and Lynch (I know, I know, neither are that good, but work with me a little here). It’s wonderful to see a team leader able to bounce back and return to the elite play he was at in 2023. The Bucs desperately need him.
Anthony Nelson!
A pick 6? A forced fumble? A sack? That was just the 1st quarter. He’s not exactly a household name, nor should he be, but he was outstanding on Sunday. He’s been a rotational pass rush guy for a few years now, and Sunday he was able to make a far bigger impact.
Todd Bowles!
Hey. Let’s be honest. Todd Bowles is the butt of a lot of jokes, and as the defensive-minded head coach of a team with an abysmal defense, he might earn it sometimes. But he put together a sublime game plan Sunday against a division rival. The Saints aren’t good, no doubt, and it would’ve been tough to see the Bucs struggle to contain such a putrid team. But the expectation was probably more of just containing them to a below-average offensive performances. Instead, the Buccaneers held them to a single field goal (that arguably shouldn’t have happened if not for more referee incompetence).
Walk the Plank
NFL Officials!
Yeah. Just really can’t make it up. Can’t excuse blowing a whistle to blow a play dead when there’s a fumble recovery. I don’t even know what else to say. Really awful jobs over this season by these refs.
