The Tampa Bay Buccaneers lost to the Miami Dolphins 20-17 on Sunday to fall to 7-9 on the season.
That can only mean it’s time for Carter Brantley’s weekly article “Captain’s Table – Walk the Plank.” Enjoy!
Walk the Plank:
Baker Mayfield
Another week, another incredibly disappointing and depressing effort from the quarterback, Mr. Mayfield. It’s become a running joke at this point, and I don’t really know what the solution is. Do they move on? Do they draft a quarterback early? He’s looked absolutely atrocious and is a not insignificant part of the reason why the Buccaneers have looked as poor as they have. He makes consistently poor throws that lead to interceptions. He’s loose with the football, and he lacks the spark that he had earlier in the season and throughout last year. He’s dealing with banged up offensive line and a seemingly uninspired offensive coordinator, and yet he still leaves so much to be desired.
The Buccaneers for Lacking Conviction
There are already reports that Tampa Bay is going to stick with their current head coach and not make any drastic changes and while that might ultimately be the right move because there aren’t too many great head coaches that are going to be available this off-season, it’s still frustrating. Bowles has run his course. The Buccaneers have hit the ceiling that they are going to reach with him as their head coach. And yet now we’re still going to have to sit through another likely wasted season with more poor play from the defense under a supposedly defensive-minded head coach. Oh well.
Todd Bowles
Speaking of that head coach, he is cooked. The defense has continuously taken step after step back during his time at the helm. There have been no redeeming qualities to this team and whether it’s fair or not he is going to get a lot of the blame here. Sure the roster isn’t ideally constructed and there were a lot of injuries, but what coach doesn’t face roster problems or injury concerns? The problem is that this defense has performed either exactly as “well” as they’ve been expected to or worse. There has been no progression or upgrades seemingly from this coaching staff. I’m done.
Captain’s Table
The Season Mercifully Coming to an End Soon
At least we can talk about some fun draft prospects after next weekend hopefully. Frankly, at this point, I don’t really even want to see the Buccaneers make the playoffs. Who cares? Who wants to watch a team get curb stomped in a playoff game at home? It is truly a Bucs life, and it’s become a real pain to have to watch this team play whatever game they’re claiming to be playing (because it’s not football).
