Greg D’Cruz’s Recap: Buccaneers vs Dolphins

Watching the Buccaneers lose to the Dolphins conjured memories of the Oprah Winfrey show. You get a turnover and you get a turnover and you get a turnover!

The Bucs stumbled their way to yet another loss. That’s now 7 losses in their last 8 games. The only reason that they’re being discussed by media members outside of Tampa is that they can still win their division. Just uttering that last sentence is crazy enough but that’s where we are at.

There are so many issues with this team that it isn’t fair to blame only one person or one position group. They’re just a bad TEAM.

Their OC, Josh Grizzard, has been the worst of the 3 OC hires by Todd Bowles and in all likelihood that will lead to the HC losing his job at seasons end. As bad as the OC has been, the defense may very well be worse. They had another defensive lapse in the secondary just as Baker Mayfield led the team to an early 7-0 start.

They couldn’t contain the Dolphins best weapon (RB Achane) and couldn’t force their rookie QB (Ewers) into making any mistakes. Remember when Bowles complex defensive blitz packages would confuse QBs? Me either.

Watching the game yesterday I showed as much emotion as they did. It became difficult to watch and I found myself flipping over to the Carolina game. Had they beaten Seattle, the Bucs season would have been over.

The nine lives Buccaneers get one more shot on Saturday to steal a division which seemed to be a lock just 5 weeks ago. Beat Carolina and hope Atlanta loses one of their next two and they can raise another NFC South Championship banner.

It will be interesting to see and hear the crowd at Ray Jay on Saturday. I was at the last home game and the boos that rained down on Bowles as he left the field in that TNF loss to Atlanta was deafening.

For a brief second I contemplated flying up for the game but then I remembered how listless they’ve been and how little entertainment they’ve provided lately and I said “nah, I’m good!”

My wife asked me why I still watch even though it’s been so heart wrenching. Well, it’s like a series you’ve committed to watching. It has good and bad seasons but you want to see it all the way to the end. That sums up what being a Buccaneers fan has taught me. This year has certainly been one to forget.

Of all the NFL teams that I could follow, why did I choose the Tampa Bay Buccaneers? It was 1979, I was an impressionable 12-year-old living in Canada. At that time, getting any NFL coverage was tough enough but that was reserved for the elite teams like the Cowboys, Steelers etc. I watched one game at 1 PM and one game at 4 PM. That was it. No Redzone, no night games on Sunday Each Christmas my family would drive from Montreal to visit my aunt in Jacksonville. I remember seeing the Bucs playing on TV against the Falcons when I was there. I saw something that day that changed my fandom forever. There was a QB wearing number 12, in an orange jersey and he wasn’t white! As a minority myself, seeing a non-white QB was something that immediately I was drawn to. I knew that this was the team, and this was the guy who I would follow. The years between 1979 and 1997 were obviously difficult but my fandom never wavered. If anything, it made me stronger as a person. I’ve often joked that I’ve had 3 wives but only ONE football team. I was asked if I wanted to write the occasional article for Bucs Report. Talking and writing about the Bucs is a full-time hobby so of course my answer was YES. I’m 56, retired and living in Costa Rica now. I sport 4 Buc tattoos and have been fortunate to make many visits to Tampa to watch the Bucs. I’ve made countless friends and even more memories. I look forward to chatting and interacting with the many Buccaneer fans throughout the world. Go Bucs Greg D’Cruz
