Many times, players have an impact on a game without ever showing up on the stat sheet.
In Tampa Bay Buccaneers head coach Todd Bowles’ opinion, that was the practice squad wide receiver Garrett Greene who played Panthers quarterback Bryce Young during practice.
A Greene-r Young
The Buccaneers stopped Young on the final drive Saturday in a 16-14 win over the Panthers to keep playoff hopes alive.
“Greene, our receiver — our practice squad receiver — did a heck of a job playing Bryce Young as quarterback and ran those guys around so we’d try to hustle to the ball and everybody to the ball,” Bowles told reporters on Saturday.
Greene played quarterback in college at West Virginia but moved over to wide receiver in 2025. An undrafted free agent, his mobility resembles Young, which allowed the Buccaneers defense to prepare for the third-year quarterback from Alabama.
Tampa Bay didn’t totally shut down Young, who had 24-35 passing for 266 yards and two touchdowns versus a pick, but Young wasn’t a factor on the ground with two runs for -1 yards. In addition, the Buccaneers defense limited the Panthers to a touchdown until 2:27 left in the game.
Now, the Buccaneers will await their playoff fate on Sunday when the New Orleans Saints take on the Atlanta Falcons.
