Who Will Be the Next Hardy Nickerson for the Buccaneers?

0

In 1993 the Buccaneers signed Linebacker Hardy Nickerson in free agency. He played six years for the Steelers and his leadership and aggressive play was instrumental in turning around a Bucs’ defense.

In 1995 the Bucs drafted two future Hall of Famers in Warren Sapp and Derrick Brooks but by then, Hardy was the heart and soul of the Bucs defense. Eventually Brooks took over and the rest is history.
Now the Bucs are most likely going to lose Lavonte David to retirement. They haven’t drafted his replacement and in 2027 there needs to be a veteran to help take that place AND they must draft one within the first two rounds.
So who is going to be “that” guy? There are some intriguing options but none that scream “leadership” like Hardy did. Guys like Kaeden Ellis and Devin Bush come to mind. The list isn’t complete because there will be many teams that will cut ties with veteran players just before free agency begins.  The Bucs need a guy who’s not only played in the league for 5-6 years but who has also demonstrated an ability to lead.
While much of the attention will be placed on finding a pass rusher, this is a key position that better not be handed over to a rookie. Obviously they need to draft a LB too but that rookie needs to learn how to be a professional.
Having a great LB can help communicate with the DL and secondary players. It’s a leadership role that will need to be filled properly. Hit a homerun and this defense can have a successful 2027!

Of all the NFL teams that I could follow, why did I choose the Tampa Bay Buccaneers? It was 1979, I was an impressionable 12-year-old living in Canada. At that time, getting any NFL coverage was tough enough but that was reserved for the elite teams like the Cowboys, Steelers etc. I watched one game at 1 PM and one game at 4 PM. That was it. No Redzone, no night games on Sunday Each Christmas my family would drive from Montreal to visit my aunt in Jacksonville. I remember seeing the Bucs playing on TV against the Falcons when I was there. I saw something that day that changed my fandom forever. There was a QB wearing number 12, in an orange jersey and he wasn’t white! As a minority myself, seeing a non-white QB was something that immediately I was drawn to. I knew that this was the team, and this was the guy who I would follow. The years between 1979 and 1997 were obviously difficult but my fandom never wavered. If anything, it made me stronger as a person. I’ve often joked that I’ve had 3 wives but only ONE football team. I was asked if I wanted to write the occasional article for Bucs Report. Talking and writing about the Bucs is a full-time hobby so of course my answer was YES. I’m 56, retired and living in Costa Rica now. I sport 4 Buc tattoos and have been fortunate to make many visits to Tampa to watch the Bucs. I’ve made countless friends and even more memories. I look forward to chatting and interacting with the many Buccaneer fans throughout the world. Go Bucs Greg D’Cruz
