The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have made a change at their offensive coordinator position. They fired Josh Grizzard after the season and have now named his replacement. That man is former Atlanta Falcons offensive coordinator Zac Robinson.
Robinson had mixed success in Atlanta. Even with the success he had, you have to wonder how much credit he deserves as opposed to how much credit super star running back Bijan Robinson deserves. It’s easy to have good results when you have an elite, do it all type running back.
Regardless of the results, there are clear and obvious tendencies from what we saw from Robinson in Atlanta. These may shift to a degree with different personnel in Tampa, but I would expect these trends to continue. I would also expect them to have an influence on the Bucs offseason.Â
Here’s how I believe the Zac Robinson hire could affect the Buccaneers offseason
One thing that I expect Robinson to do with the Bucs is establish a strong running game. It’s something he was committed to doing in Atlanta and he had reasonable success in doing so. This could be good news for running back Bucky Irving.
It could also be good news for whoever shares a backfield with him. We don’t necessarily know who that will be as Rachaad White and Sean Tucker are both free agents. However, we do know that Robinson used multiple backs in Atlanta and didn’t rely on one workhorse.Â
One name that the Bucs could target in free agency is Tyler Allgeier. The 25 year old running back was a significant part of the offense in Atlanta under Robinson. If he liked his role then he could follow Robinson to Tampa and add an element of physicality and toughness that they are currently lacking.Â
It could also influence the type of running back that the Buccaneers could target in the draft. A type of player that is a similar style to Allgeier is Penn State running back Kaytron Allen. He is 5 ’11 and 220 lbs and also has that short yardage niche that Allgeier had under Robinson.
If there aren’t any defensive players left for the Bucs worthy of the 15th overall pick then I believe that this hire could increase the odds of drafting star Notre Dame running back Jeremiyah Love. Robinson really featured his running backs receiving ability with the Falcons. Love brings the skill set of a star ball carrier who can do it all that Robinson had in Atlanta.
I believe that this hire also puts tight ends higher on the Bucs priority list in the draft. Only one other team in the NFL used more two tight end sets than the Falcons did last year. So even if the Bucs do re-sign Cade Otton (which feels like a lock with this hire) they will still want another capable tight end to play with him.
This could be Oregon star tight end Kenyon Sadiq. He reminds me a lot of Detroit Lions tight end Sam Laporta and we know that the Bucs were very interested in him a few years ago. That would give Robinson the type of pass catching threat at tight end that he had in Atlanta.Â
Other early tight end names that seem like a good fit would be Ohio State’s Max Klare and Georgia’s Oscar Delp. Both are good athletes and well rounded players. I expect both to be bigger name pros than they were college players.
Of course, the Bucs could also hit the free agent market for additional tight end help. And if they are looking for a guy like Robinson had in Atlanta, Falcons star tight end Kyle Pitts is actually a free agent so they could target a guy EXACTLY like him. Pitts was an All Pro last year under Robinson and he may want to stay with the play caller who helped get him there.
