Buccaneers Reportedly Contacted Sean McDermott After Bills Firing

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers are making moves to revamp their staff this offseason. They’re keeping head coach Todd Bowles, but brought in some new assistants. Those assistants include Zac Robinson as their new offensive coordinator and Danny Smith as their special teams coordinator.

The Buccaneers approached Sean McDermott about joining their staff under Bowles. But he decided to take a year off instead, preferring to reassess his coaching options in 2027.

Via Fox Sports Greg Auman,

“Bucs talked to ex-Bills coach Sean McDermott to check about joining Todd Bowles’ staff, but he’s expected to take this year off and re-assess his options in 2027. McDermott overlapped with Jason Licht with Eagles 2003-07 and interviewed for Bucs’ HC job in 2016.”

The team is still filling out the rest of their coaching positions, including some key defensive roles, and reportedly made a strong play for a recently-fired AFC head coach, Sean McDermott, though he ultimately decided to take a year off.

McDermott spent six seasons as the Carolina Panthers’ defensive coordinator from 2011-16 before taking the reins as Buffalo Bills’ head coach in 2017. During his nine-year tenure in Buffalo, he racked up a 98-50 record. He also led the team to two AFC Championship Games. McDermott was let go after a tough AFC Divisional Round loss to the Denver Broncos, and he’s reportedly considering taking a year off from coaching.

The Buccaneers were likely targeting McDermott for a defensive role, given his expertise. With Todd Bowles, still calling defensive plays. McDermott might not be interested in a lesser role, having just stepped down as a head coach.

The Buccaneers are still in the process of filling out their coaching staff for the 2026 season. They’re expected to finalize their coaching lineup soon. Despite being impressed with McDermott’s credentials, they’ll have to look elsewhere as he plans to take a year off from coaching..
