Will the 2026 Buccaneers Be Contenders or Pretenders?

It won’t take long to figure out what kind of team the Buccaneers will field in 2026.
While rookies will contribute, very few make an immediate impact—especially pass rushers, which remains the most glaring weakness on this roster. Linebacker isn’t far behind, and some would argue it’s an even bigger concern.
The new NFL year begins March 11 at 4:00 PM, but realistically we’ll know the Bucs’ direction days before that, once free agency starts to take shape.
There are several defensive acquisitions that could instantly elevate this team into contender status. Without them, the outlook for the 2026 defense is mediocre at best. For the past two offseasons, Jason Licht has failed to land even one true impact defender via free agency. This time, he doesn’t have the luxury of patience.
What the Bucs do in free agency will tell us everything about how they view the 2026 season. To quote The Who, Buccaneer fans “won’t be fooled again” into believing the in-house options are enough.
The Bucs will be contenders if they:
  • Trade for Maxx Crosby, or
  • Sign Trey Hendrickson in free agency, or
  • Sign K’Lavon Chaisson, or
  • Sign TWO of the following: A.J. Epenesa, Khalil Mack, Jalen Phillips
The Bucs will be pretenders if they:
Sign any defensive player over the age of 31 and call it a solution.
Yes, linebacker still needs upgrading, and that’s another area worth watching closely. Teams tend to attack that position early in free agency, and the Bucs can’t afford to miss there either.
Jason Licht may have avoided the full wrath of the fans but if he doesn’t hit a home run in free agency at this position then his seat will be justifiably hot heading into the 2026.

Of all the NFL teams that I could follow, why did I choose the Tampa Bay Buccaneers? It was 1979, I was an impressionable 12-year-old living in Canada. At that time, getting any NFL coverage was tough enough but that was reserved for the elite teams like the Cowboys, Steelers etc. I watched one game at 1 PM and one game at 4 PM. That was it. No Redzone, no night games on Sunday Each Christmas my family would drive from Montreal to visit my aunt in Jacksonville. I remember seeing the Bucs playing on TV against the Falcons when I was there. I saw something that day that changed my fandom forever. There was a QB wearing number 12, in an orange jersey and he wasn’t white! As a minority myself, seeing a non-white QB was something that immediately I was drawn to. I knew that this was the team, and this was the guy who I would follow. The years between 1979 and 1997 were obviously difficult but my fandom never wavered. If anything, it made me stronger as a person. I’ve often joked that I’ve had 3 wives but only ONE football team. I was asked if I wanted to write the occasional article for Bucs Report. Talking and writing about the Bucs is a full-time hobby so of course my answer was YES. I’m 56, retired and living in Costa Rica now. I sport 4 Buc tattoos and have been fortunate to make many visits to Tampa to watch the Bucs. I’ve made countless friends and even more memories. I look forward to chatting and interacting with the many Buccaneer fans throughout the world. Go Bucs Greg D’Cruz
