The 2025 Tampa Bay Buccaneers didn’t exactly eat down the stretch, losing seven of their final nine games and leaving questions about their hunger. Late-season lapses exposed a lack of consistency and urgency, signaling that the team must come into 2026 with a sharper edge and a stronger drive to finish games.
You could even say the Buccaneers just didn’t look hungry. It definitely looked like their opponents were.
Head coach Todd Bowles recently talked about this,
“I don’t think teams were more hungry to play; they beat us,” Bowles stated via JoeBucsFan. “That doesn’t mean we weren’t hungry to play. We made physical mistakes, but effort-wise, our effort was outstanding. We didn’t play smart at times, we didn’t coach smart at times. But as far as from a ‘hungry’ standpoint, I would not use that word.”
Bowles’ remark gains extra weight given what Buccaneers GM Jason Licht told Kevin Clark of ESPN that same afternoon. Clark asked Licht to pinpoint the biggest difference between the 2026 Buccaneers and their 2025 team.
“Hunger, I feel like we got a lot to prove. I feel like we let a lot of fans down last year. A lot of self-reflecting and I feel like we were better than that. So, I think that sentiment is shared by everybody in the organization.”
Bowles believes the Bucs played with hunger last season, but Licht stresses that maintaining that same hunger will be essential for the 2026 team to truly stand out. He added that many of the free agents brought in this offseason were drawn by that very energy, viewing Tampa Bay as a more competitive, well-rounded team than the 8-9 squad that limped out of January. The combination of returning players motivated to improve and newcomers eager to prove themselves could create a team with greater intensity, focus, and consistency down the stretch.
Let Me Clear My Throat
So, the 2025 Buccaneers “didn’t exactly eat” late in the season, lost most of their final games, and now everyone’s talking about “hunger” like it’s a secret weapon. Bowles insists they were hungry but made dumb mistakes, while Licht says hunger will magically separate 2026 from the underwhelming 8-9 team. Free agents are apparently thrilled to join a team that underperformed last year, and somehow all this self-reflection and motivational talk is supposed to make fans believe the Bucs will suddenly finish stronger. In short: last year was disappointing, this year the solution is… talk about being hungry.
