There’s a reason why I’m not a big draft mock guy. There’s absolutely no possible way that fans can predict what other teams are going to do before their team is on the clock.
A great illustration of that occurred on Friday night when the Buccaneers drafted Rueben Bain Jr. with the 15th pick. Even with the news that broke about his car accident, which resulted in the death of a passenger, (no charges were filled) and his shorter arms, everyone had him “mocked” to a team picking in top 10 or earlier.
But, there he was sitting there when the Bucs were ready to pick and they wasted very little time drafting him.
Immediate Impact
By all accounts, this guy will be an immediate starter this year. There’s always a learning curve with young players so I don’t expect that he will dominate the league BUT the Bucs have done a good job at building depth along the defensive line.
Legacy Pick
In the 2nd round they grabbed Josiah Trotter a LB to compete for a starting job. The Trotters (Father played and brother playing) have been learning to play LB for years. After losing Lavonte David to retirement, he will get a chance to learn from new Bucs LB Alex Anzalone and that’s all we can ask for at this point.
Gem In The Making
In the 3rd round the Buccaneers, needing to replace Evans size, grabbed 6’4 WR Ted Hurst. Nobody will replace Evans on and off the field but they now have a big bodied target in the red zone which was gone when Evans left via FA.
Today rounds 4-7 will take place. Most of the players drafted in these rounds will be competing for backup roles and Special Teams more specifically. Any production they receive will be an added bonus.
Multiple Choices
CB, OG, DT, TE and S are all positions that could use an infusion of youth so we will see what transpired.
It is impossible to fix all the holes on this team in just one draft, especially on Defense, BUT I’m encouraged by what I’ve seen so far. The drafting of Bain boosts my excitement level considerably!
