Thankfully, I won’t have to hear the words “mock draft” for a little while.
The draft has officially come and gone, and while nobody can truly predict how a group of mostly 21–22-year-olds will impact their teams, the Buccaneers at least made an effort to improve with the following selections:
- Round 1, Pick 15: Rueben Bain Jr., EDGE, Miami
- Round 2, Pick 46: Josiah Trotter, LB, Missouri
- Round 3, Pick 84: Ted Hurst, WR, Georgia State
- Round 4, Pick 116: Keionte Scott, DB, Miami
- Round 5, Pick 155: DeMonte Capehart, DT, Clemson
- Round 5, Pick 160: Billy Schrauth, OG, Notre Dame
- Round 6, Pick 185: Bauer Sharp, TE, LSU
The expectation is that at least the first two picks will compete for starting jobs, while the rest project as rotational contributors or practice squad players who can develop over time.
One position that still needs serious attention is cornerback. There’s little reason for confidence in the current starters, Zyon McCollum and Benjamin Morrison. McCollum hasn’t shown meaningful improvement since signing his new contract, and Morrison has struggled to stay healthy.
It would be surprising—and disappointing—if the Bucs don’t add at least one, if not two, veteran cornerbacks to push this group in training camp.
Filling every hole on defense in a single offseason is unrealistic, so it’s likely that shoring up the secondary will remain a top priority next year.
Still, for now, the Bucs have done a solid job bringing in younger defensive talent. Hope springs eternal that this group can develop—and produce—quickly
