The Tampa Bay Buccaneers are searching for a receiver to emerge as their No. 1 option in 2026, and Emeka Egbuka could be that player.
Selected in the first round of the 2025 NFL Draft, Egbuka made an immediate impact during the first half of his rookie season. Through Weeks 1-9, he recorded 34 receptions for 562 yards and five touchdowns while showcasing strong route running and several highlight-reel catches.
His production slowed over the second half of the season. From Weeks 10-18, Egbuka totaled 29 receptions for 376 yards and one touchdown as the Buccaneers’ offense struggled overall.
Recently, general manager Jason Licht discussed Egbuka’s second-half decline during an interview with Ira Kaufman of JoeBucsFan.
Jason Licht Addresses Egbuka’s Rookie Challenges
According to Licht, several factors contributed to Egbuka’s reduced production late in the season, including the demands placed on him as a rookie and injuries within the receiving corps.
“First of all, rookies coming from championship-type programs that play deep into their season, then barely have enough time to train and come right into the fray here and that has something to do with it,” Licht said, per JoeBucsFan. “Then people started paying more attention to Emeka and we had the injuries to Chris and Mike (Evans), where we were forced to play Emeka in multiple spots. As smart as he is, and he’s incredibly smart, to ask a rookie to move around like that, play the X, play the Z, it took a toll on him.”
Licht pointed to Egbuka’s transition from college and the added responsibilities he assumed during the season. Injuries forced the rookie to line up at multiple receiver positions, increasing his workload as defenses focused more attention on him.
Looking Ahead To Year Two
Despite the challenges of his rookie season, Egbuka will enter 2026 with the benefit of a full offseason of preparation.
With Chris Godwin and Jalen McMillan expected to be healthy to begin the season, Egbuka is likely to spend more time at the Z receiver position. That stability could help him build on the flashes he showed during his first NFL campaign.
Egbuka has already turned heads during organized team activities with several impressive catches. He will look to carry that momentum through the final week of OTAs before the Buccaneers begin mandatory minicamp on June 16 and training camp later in July.
