The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have added more competition to their special teams unit, signing kicker B.T. Potter and waiving punter Aidan Laros, according to the team’s website.
Potter arrives in Tampa after a successful collegiate career at Clemson. During his five seasons with the Tigers, he converted 234 of 235 extra-point attempts, good for a 99.6 percent success rate. He also made 73 of 97 field-goal attempts, finishing with a 75.3 percent field-goal percentage.
A member of Clemson’s 2018 national championship team, Potter earned second-team All-ACC honors twice during his career. He left the program holding multiple school records, including the most field goals made, most extra points made, and most points scored in Clemson history.
After going undrafted in 2023, Potter signed with the Pittsburgh Steelers. While in Pittsburgh, he worked under special teams coordinator Danny Smith, who now holds the same position with the Buccaneers.
That prior relationship could help Potter as he competes for a spot in Tampa Bay. Smith is familiar with Potter’s abilities after their time together during the Steelers’ 2023 preseason.
He last played professionally with the Michigan Panthers of the UFL during the 2024 season before joining the Buccaneers.
He now enters a position group led by Chase McLaughlin, who has been one of the NFL’s most reliable kickers during his time in Tampa Bay. McLaughlin has converted 91 of 101 field-goal attempts, a 90.1 percent success rate, while making 119 of 122 extra-point attempts for a 97.5 percent mark.
McLaughlin also owns the NFL record for the longest field goal made in an outdoor stadium, connecting from 65 yards.
Despite McLaughlin’s success, the addition of Potter provides Tampa Bay with another option at kicker and gives Smith a player he already knows well. If Potter performs well during training camp and the preseason, he could position himself as a valuable depth option for the organization moving forward.
