The Tampa Bay Buccaneers are using mandatory minicamp to evaluate talent beyond the current roster.
With several short-term injuries impacting depth at tight end during this week’s practices, the Buccaneers have brought in former Auburn tight end Brandon Frazier as a tryout player.
At 6-foot-7 and 267 pounds, Frazier immediately stands out from a physical standpoint. The former Auburn standout spent six seasons with the Tigers and appeared in 55 games during his college career. He finished with 25 receptions for 218 yards and two touchdowns while establishing himself as one of Auburn’s top blocking tight ends.
Opportunity Arrives During Minicamp
NFL teams frequently use minicamp and training camp practices to evaluate players when injuries create temporary roster shortages.
That appears to be the case for the Buccaneers this week.
Frazier entered the NFL as an undrafted free agent following the 2026 NFL Draft and initially signed with the Atlanta Falcons. He was later waived, creating an opportunity for Tampa Bay to get a closer look at the veteran college tight end.
While tryout invitations do not guarantee a contract, strong performances during minicamp can often lead to future opportunities.
More Than Just a Receiving Threat
Although Frazier’s receiving numbers were modest during his time at Auburn, scouts and evaluators have consistently praised his blocking ability.
His size and length helped him become a valuable part of Auburn’s offense, particularly in run-blocking situations. At the professional level, that skill set could help him carve out a role as a depth tight end or special teams contributor.
Frazier’s final collegiate season came after overcoming an injury-shortened 2024 campaign. He returned for a sixth year at Auburn and provided veteran leadership in a young tight end room before declaring for the NFL Draft.
Making the Most of the Opportunity
For now, Frazier’s focus will be on making a strong impression during the final days of Buccaneers minicamp.
The former Auburn tight end brings intriguing size, extensive college experience, and a reputation as a physical blocker. Whether that translates into a future roster opportunity remains to be seen, but the Buccaneers clearly felt he was worth a closer look as they continue evaluating talent ahead of training camp.
