Buccaneers All-Pro Tristan Wirfs Weighs In On Baker Mayfield’s Contract Situation

0

Contract talks between Baker Mayfield and the Buccaneers remain ongoing, but the two sides do not appear close at this time.

The veteran quarterback is entering the final season of the deal he signed in 2024. Earlier this offseason, Mayfield acknowledged that negotiations have not gained much traction. He also revealed that he does not plan to continue contract talks once training camp begins.

While there is still work to do, few expect the relationship between Mayfield and the Buccaneers to deteriorate. Since arriving in Tampa Bay, Mayfield has helped lead the team to success while becoming a respected figure inside the locker room.

One of his biggest supporters is All-Pro left tackle Tristan Wirfs.

Wirfs Hoping Mayfield Stays

During a recent interview with WFLA’s Aileen Hnatiuk, Wirfs discussed Mayfield’s ongoing contract situation. The star tackle made it clear he hopes his quarterback remains in Tampa Bay for years to come.

Even the first time around, it didn’t really affect him, like how he approached every day, how he interacted with any of us, how he went out to practice. It never affected him that way,Wirfs said. “I don’t know a ton about it. Obviously, I want him to be here for a long time. I want him to be my quarterback for a long time. So, I hope things work out for him and with the whole contract situation. But I know he’s still the same guy who’s coming in here day in and day out and leading us… I know he’s gonna be the same dog that he always is.

Wirfs praised Mayfield’s consistency and leadership. He also noted that contract discussions have never changed how the quarterback approaches his job.

Familiar Territory For Wirfs

Wirfs understands the business side of the NFL better than most. He went through his own contract negotiations before signing a lucrative extension with the Buccaneers in 2024.

Despite the uncertainty surrounding Mayfield’s future, there has been little indication that the situation has become a distraction. The quarterback recently expressed confidence in his ability to have a strong season regardless of when a new deal gets completed.

The deadline Mayfield set for negotiations is quickly approaching. Still, both sides have repeatedly expressed interest in reaching an agreement.

If Wirfs gets his wish, the quarterback protecting Tampa Bay’s championship hopes will remain the same for a long time.
