The Tampa Bay Buccaneers are expected to be cautious with running back Bucky Irving as he works his way back from injuries. That approach could create an opportunity for one of the team’s key free-agent additions.
Irving dealt with both foot and shoulder injuries during the 2025 season. While the young running back is expected to be ready for training camp, Tampa Bay has little reason to rush him back onto the field.
The Buccaneers have added veteran running back Kenneth Gainwell to help strengthen the position group. His arrival gives the team another reliable option in both the running and passing game.
Gainwell Brings Versatility
According to ESPN’s Jenna Laine, Gainwell offers much more than a typical third-down role.
“With Bucky Irving coming off foot and shoulder injuries, the Bucs needed not only a change-of-pace, third-down back, but someone who could do a little more, if needed,” Laine wrote. “Gainwell’s 1,023 yards from scrimmage last season were second most of any position on the Steelers behind starter Jaylen Warren, and he tied with Warren for a team-leading eight touchdowns. He gave up one sack this past season on 41 pass blocking reps.”
Those numbers highlight why Tampa Bay targeted Gainwell in free agency. He can contribute as a runner, receiver, and pass protector. That versatility could prove valuable early in the season.
Competition In The Backfield
The Buccaneers still view Irving as a major piece of their offense. However, having Gainwell on the roster allows the coaching staff to manage his workload carefully.
If Irving is limited at any point during training camp or the preseason, Gainwell could see additional reps with the first-team offense. Strong performances could also earn him a larger role once the regular season begins.
Tampa Bay’s backfield appears deeper than it was a year ago. With Irving returning from injury and Gainwell capable of handling multiple responsibilities, the Buccaneers may have more flexibility than ever at running back heading into the 2026 season.
