For nearly a decade, Buccaneers’ wide receiver Chris Godwin shared the spotlight with Mike Evans.
That partnership is now over.
As Luke Easterling of Athlon Sports pointed out, Evans’ departure has completely changed the dynamic inside Tampa Bay’s receiver room. The veteran wideout now enters the season as the unquestioned leader of the group.
Godwin has embraced important roles before.
This one may be his biggest.
Leadership Role Comes Naturally
The Buccaneers selected Godwin in the third round of the 2017 NFL Draft.
He quickly developed into far more than a complementary receiver. Throughout his career, Godwin repeatedly led Tampa Bay in receptions and receiving yards. He consistently produced despite sharing the field with one of the NFL’s elite receivers.
As Easterling wrote, replacing Evans’ leadership should not be the difficult part.
Godwin has earned tremendous respect throughout the organization. His teammates recognize his professionalism and steady approach.
Like Evans, he prefers to lead through preparation instead of speeches.
That example should continue to benefit a young receiving corps.
Replacing Mike Evans Is Another Story
Leadership is only part of the equation.
Replacing Evans’ production presents a much greater challenge.
Few receivers possess Evans’ rare combination of size, strength and playmaking ability. Add to that the fact that Evans was sneaky fast. Almost deceptively fast for his size. His presence forced defenses to adjust every week.
No single player can truly duplicate that impact.
Instead, Tampa Bay will likely rely on several receivers to help fill the void.
Emeka Egbuka has already generated significant excitement entering his second season.
Jalen McMillan offers intriguing upside after injuries limited him last year.
Tez Johnson flashed scoring ability as a rookie.
Third-round pick Ted Hurst adds another athletic option to the offense.
Even with those talented weapons, Godwin remains Baker Mayfield’s most dependable target.
Health Could Decide Everything
Godwin has consistently produced when available. Remaining on the field is now the biggest question.
He has missed 18 games over the past two seasons. Staying healthy throughout 2026 will be critical. The pressure extends beyond his role in the offense.
According to Over The Cap, Godwin carries the NFL’s highest salary cap figure among wide receivers this season.
As Easterling noted in his analysis, several Buccaneers face pressure entering the year. However, Godwin’s responsibilities have grown considerably following Evans’ exit.
If he stays healthy, he has every opportunity to prove he can thrive as Tampa Bay’s top receiver.
