Dan Graziano: Buccaneers Unlikely to Finalize Long-Term Baker Mayfield Deal Before Season

0

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers and quarterback Baker Mayfield remain far apart on a contract extension. As training camp approaches, the possibility of a new long-term deal appears increasingly uncertain.

According to ESPN insider Dan Graziano, the two sides could still reach an agreement before the regular season. However, that agreement may not be the long-term extension many expected.

Dan Graziano Expects Some Type of Adjustment

Graziano believes the Buccaneers could alter Mayfield’s current contract before the season begins. He stopped short of predicting a long-term extension.

If I had to guess, I’d say the Bucs find a way to make some kind of adjustment to Mayfield’s deal before the season starts, but I can’t say for sure that adjustment will be a long-term extension,” wrote Graziano. “A lot still feels up in the air right now.

Graziano did not explain what that adjustment might be. It could involve additional guaranteed money, a raise for the 2026 season, or another short-term solution.

What he did make clear is that a lengthy extension does not appear imminent.

Why Baker Mayfield Wants a New Contract

Mayfield’s biggest concern appears to be his current salary. Among established veteran starting quarterbacks, his average annual value ranks near the bottom.

Aaron Rodgers and Malik Willis earn less annually, but neither is viewed as a franchise quarterback entering 2026.

Meanwhile, Sam Darnold, Daniel Jones, Deshaun Watson, and Jalen Hurts all earn more than Mayfield. Darnold even signed his current contract before helping lead the Seattle Seahawks to a Super Bowl championship.

Given Mayfield’s production in Tampa Bay, it is understandable why his camp believes he deserves a raise.

The Buccaneers, however, have reasons to remain patient. While Mayfield has played well, the organization must determine whether he is the quarterback to build around for years to come.

A Short-Term Extension Could Make Sense

If a long-term agreement remains unlikely, a shorter extension may benefit both sides.

The Buccaneers could simply increase Mayfield’s salary for the upcoming season. Doing so would reward him without creating a lengthy commitment.

Another option would be a two-year extension worth roughly $90 million. Mayfield would receive the raise he wants while Tampa Bay gains additional time to evaluate its long-term plans.

Mayfield carries a $39 million cap hit this season. The franchise tag projects around $43 million. A short-term extension could provide flexibility while avoiding another contract standoff next offseason.

There is risk for both sides. If Mayfield struggles, Tampa Bay would still have a movable contract. If he excels, the Buccaneers could negotiate another extension from a stronger position.

A short-term compromise may ultimately be the adjustment Graziano referenced. It gives Mayfield a deserved raise while allowing the Buccaneers to postpone a long-term decision.
