There shouldn’t be much debate over whether Vita Vea deserves another contract from the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
He’s been the anchor of the defensive line since arriving as a first-round pick in 2018, helped lead the franchise to a Super Bowl championship, and remains one of the NFL’s premier run defenders. Few players have meant more to Todd Bowles’ defense over the last eight seasons.
The real question isn’t whether Vea has earned another deal.
It’s how much long-term money the Buccaneers should commit to a player entering his age-31 season.
The NFL Still Views Vea as One of the League’s Best
ESPN recently surveyed NFL executives, coaches, and scouts to rank the league’s top defensive tackles. While Vea narrowly missed the Top 10, he still received honorable mention recognition and praise from an anonymous defensive line coach.
“He’s still such a load to deal with, and he played a little lighter last year, which is good for him,” the anonymous defensive line coach told ESPN.
That shouldn’t surprise anyone who has watched Vea play.
His value has never been measured strictly by sacks. He commands double teams, collapses the pocket, and creates opportunities for everyone around him. There are very few defensive tackles capable of impacting a game the way Vea does.
He’s Earned Another Deal
If this decision were based solely on performance, the Buccaneers would already have Vea’s extension completed.
Even during a statistically quieter 2025 season, Vea played all 17 games and remained the focal point of opposing offensive game plans. His presence makes life easier for Tampa Bay’s linebackers and edge rushers, even when it doesn’t show up in the box score.
Players with that kind of impact don’t become available very often.
Vea has earned the right to finish his career in Tampa Bay.
The Age Question Can’t Be Ignored
This is where the conversation becomes difficult.
Vea turns 31 this season, and history isn’t particularly kind to defensive linemen entering their thirties.
While elite interior defenders often age better than players who rely solely on speed, there’s still considerable risk in handing out a massive four- or five-year contract.
The Buccaneers have to think beyond what Vea has already accomplished.
They have to project what he’ll be at 33, 34, and even 35 years old.
That’s a much harder evaluation.
A Shorter Deal Makes the Most Sense
According to Spotrac, Vea’s projected market value sits near $28 million per season, putting him among the NFL’s highest-paid defensive tackles.
He deserves to be paid accordingly.
What he may not deserve is a lengthy contract that could become a burden during its final years.
The smarter approach would be rewarding Vea with a shorter extension that offers significant guaranteed money while protecting the organization from the risks that naturally come with age.
That gives Vea the respect he’s earned without forcing the Buccaneers into an uncomfortable long-term commitment.
Reward the Player, Protect the Franchise
The Buccaneers shouldn’t hesitate to pay Vita Vea.
They should hesitate to pay him deep into his thirties.
Those are two very different conversations.
Vea has been one of the defining players of this era of Buccaneers football and has absolutely earned another contract.
Now Jason Licht must find the balance between rewarding one of the franchise’s most important veterans and making the type of long-term decision that keeps Tampa Bay positioned to compete for years to come.
