The Tampa Bay Buccaneers are entering a new era on defense. After a disappointing 2025 season ended with the team missing the playoffs, Tampa Bay knew changes were necessary heading into 2026.
However, there is no denying the Buccaneers would love to still have Lavonte David leading the defense. After spending his entire 14-year career in Tampa Bay, the franchise legend decided to retire this offseason.
David’s departure leaves behind a massive leadership void. While Tampa Bay cannot replace everything David brought to the organization, the team hopes first-round pick Rueben Bain Jr. can become one of the players who defines the next chapter of Buccaneers football.
David Sees Something Special in Rueben Bain Jr.
Replacing David’s impact will be nearly impossible. The veteran linebacker became one of the greatest players in franchise history while earning a Pro Bowl selection and three All-Pro honors.
Even in his final season, David remained one of Tampa Bay’s most productive defenders. In 2025, he recorded 114 tackles, 3.5 sacks, one interception, three pass breakups, and two forced fumbles.
The Buccaneers are not asking Bain to replace David’s position. The two players play different roles on defense. Instead, Tampa Bay hopes Bain can become another defensive cornerstone who brings star power and leadership to the unit.
Bain Brings Star Potential to Tampa Bay
The Buccaneers selected Bain with the No. 15 overall pick in the 2026 NFL Draft after an impressive career with the Miami Hurricanes.
During his final season at Miami, Bain recorded a career-high 9.5 sacks while establishing himself as one of college football’s most disruptive defenders. His ability to impact games from the defensive line immediately made him one of the top prospects in the draft.
Tampa Bay understands that young players must earn leadership roles. However, the franchise believes Bain has the talent and mentality needed to become a major part of the defense’s future.
David and Bain Already Had a Connection
The relationship between David and Bain goes back before the Buccaneers selected the former Miami standout.
Both players are from the Miami, Florida area, creating a natural connection before Bain arrived in Tampa. Although David will not get the chance to play alongside the rookie, he plans to remain a mentor throughout Bain’s career.
David even admitted Bain’s arrival briefly made him question his retirement decision.
“I knew Bain already,” David said on This is Football. “I reached out to him after he got drafted, he told me, ‘Man, I wish you just waited one more year.’ I was in my mind like, ‘Maybe I should have, but, you know, the deal is done already. I’m out, my guy.’ But, I told him I’m definitely going to be there to be supporting him and stuff like that.”
Bain Has a Chance to Carry the Defensive Legacy Forward
No player can replace what David meant to the Buccaneers. His leadership, consistency, and longevity helped establish the identity of Tampa Bay’s defense for more than a decade.
Bain does not have to become David. He simply has to become the best version of himself.
If Bain develops into a disruptive force who consistently affects games, he can become one of the leaders of Tampa Bay’s next defensive era. Having David’s support along the way could only help accelerate that process.
