The Tampa Bay Buccaneers attacked their biggest defensive weakness this offseason. They added experience through free agency and upside through the NFL Draft.
Signing Alex Anzalone and drafting Josiah Trotter gives Tampa Bay both immediate production and long-term potential.
Anzalone Was One of Free Agency’s Best Bargains
The Athletic’s Daniel Popper praised the Buccaneers’ signing of Anzalone. He even awarded the move an A+ grade.
Tampa Bay signed the veteran linebacker to a two-year, $17 million contract. That’s outstanding value for a proven starter.
Popper noted Anzalone’s athleticism and versatility. He highlighted the veteran’s speed, coverage ability, and effectiveness as a blitzer.
While Anzalone isn’t the most physical run defender, his overall game fits Tampa Bay’s defensive scheme well.
The Buccaneers needed leadership after Lavonte David’s retirement. Anzalone brings exactly that while remaining an impact player.
Josiah Trotter Could Be the Next Defensive Leader
The Buccaneers didn’t stop with free agency. They invested another premium asset by selecting Josiah Trotter in the second round.
Trotter enters the NFL with an impressive reputation as a physical linebacker. He attacks downhill and rarely misses tackles.
His instincts against the run made him one of college football’s most dependable defenders.
There is also plenty of room for growth. Trotter is still only 21 years old and has limited college experience.
Patience Could Pay Off
Trotter’s development may take time after recovering from knee surgery. He also missed his freshman season with a torn ACL.
Despite those setbacks, his upside remains obvious.
If he progresses quickly, he could challenge Christian Rozeboom for playing time during the season.
Eventually, Trotter has the talent to become one of the cornerstones of Tampa Bay’s defense.
Summary
The Buccaneers addressed linebacker with both the present and future in mind. Alex Anzalone gives the defense an experienced starter, while Josiah Trotter offers long-term upside. If both players meet expectations, Tampa Bay could have one of its strongest linebacker groups in years.
