Former NFL players often transition into media after retirement. Some become respected analysts through thoughtful commentary. Others discover that controversy keeps their names in the headlines. LeSean McCoy’s latest comments about Buccaneers quarterback Baker Mayfield feel like another example of the latter.
McCoy was one of the league’s best running backs during his prime. By the time he joined Tampa Bay in 2020, however, those elite days were over. He earned a Super Bowl ring with the Buccaneers, but his playing career ended shortly afterward. These days, McCoy co-hosts Speakeasy alongside Emmanuel Acho, where hot takes often generate more attention than balanced analysis.
McCoy Takes an Unnecessary Shot at Mayfield
During a recent episode of Speakeasy, McCoy dismissed Mayfield’s accomplishments and questioned why so many people praise him.
“Y’all blow people up like Baker Mayfield. Baker Mayfield has been above average for a very long time.”
“Every once in a while, he has a very good year that makes people like y’all talk about him.”
He even mocked Mayfield’s personality and confidence by adding:
“He’s a little ass dude… I knew s*** was crazy when he was acting like he was Brett Favre.”
Those comments weren’t constructive criticism. They sounded like another retired player searching for attention by attacking a current star.
Baker Mayfield Has Earned His Confidence
Mayfield has never lacked confidence. He has also backed it up throughout his career. After many questioned his future, he rebuilt his reputation in Tampa Bay. He helped keep the Buccaneers among the NFC’s contenders while producing some of the best football of his career.
Confident players talk during games. That has always been true in the NFL. Mayfield isn’t doing anything unique by exchanging words with opponents.
McCoy’s Double Standard Is Hard to Ignore
The conversation later shifted to videos showing Mayfield trash-talking Eagles cornerback Quinyon Mitchell. McCoy clearly took issue with those exchanges.
“See, the problem is, when dudes are regular or above average, we want to hype ’em up.”
“Y’all rather support and give love to guys like Baker Mayfield or Sam Darnold but disrespect guys like Josh Allen and Lamar Jackson.”
McCoy then argued that Mayfield hadn’t earned the right to challenge Mitchell.
“Who are you? That dude is like an All-Pro. One of the best at the position.”
That criticism rings hollow. McCoy built his own career with confidence and swagger. He rarely shied away from letting opponents hear about it. Criticizing Mayfield for showing that same fire feels incredibly hypocritical.
Even T.J. Ward Didn’t Agree
Former Buccaneer safety T.J. Ward pushed back during the discussion. Ward argued that emotions take over during competition. He suggested every player talks trash in the heat of battle.
“I might say that. He can’t say that, though.”
That response summed up the entire discussion. McCoy wasn’t applying the same standard to himself that he applied to Mayfield.
Reality Check
LeSean sounds like an idiot here. He goes after Mayfield calling him a little ass dude. Le-Whiner, he’s bigger than you and just a half an inch shorter than the person you compared his size too in Brett Farve.
The difference I’ll point to between the three is, Mayfield hasn’t been accused of domestic battery like McCoy has. Nor has he been accused of hiring people to do a home invasion of his ex-girlfriend. That was you.
Mayfield also hasn’t sent dick pics to random women or stolen tax money. That was Farve.
Mayfield isn’t a cheapskate and actually tips when out eating. Can you say that La-Cheapo?
LeSean McCoy has every right to voice his opinion. However, this latest rant feels more like an attempt to remain relevant than genuine football analysis. Baker Mayfield has earned the confidence he carries onto the field. If McCoy wants headlines, criticizing the Buccaneers quarterback is certainly one way to get them. That doesn’t make his argument any more convincing.
But, I’m a decent guy, so I’ll offer Shady some cheese with his whine.
