The Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Baker Mayfield continue working toward a contract extension. If reports are accurate, the two sides may not be far apart.
Market Value Continues to Rise for NFL Quarterbacks
According to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, a new deal averaging around $50 million per season is the expected benchmark. That number may sound massive, but it reflects today’s quarterback market.
With 12 quarterbacks already earning at least $50 million annually, Mayfield isn’t asking to reset the market. He’s simply seeking the going rate for a proven franchise quarterback.
Mayfield Has Proven His Worth in Tampa Bay
Since arriving in Tampa Bay three years ago, Mayfield has transformed both his career and the Buccaneers’ offense.
The former No. 1 overall pick has earned two Pro Bowl selections. He has also become one of the league’s most respected leaders at quarterback.
Finding a dependable franchise quarterback remains the hardest task in the NFL. The Buccaneers already have one.
Tampa Bay Faces an Important Deadline
Mayfield enters the final season of the three-year, $100 million contract he signed with Tampa Bay. Without an extension, he could become an unrestricted free agent after the 2026 season.
If the two sides fail to reach an agreement before veterans report on July 28, negotiations are expected to pause until after the season.
That makes the coming days especially important.
The Quarterback Market Leaves Little Room for Debate
Patrick Mahomes leads the NFL with a $64 million average annual salary. Dak Prescott follows at $60 million per year.
Joe Burrow, Josh Allen, Jordan Love, Trevor Lawrence, Matthew Stafford, Jared Goff, Brock Purdy, Justin Herbert, Lamar Jackson, and Jalen Hurts also earn at least $50 million annually.
Considering those contracts, paying Mayfield around $50 million per season shouldn’t surprise anyone.
The quarterback market has changed dramatically. Teams either pay their franchise quarterback or risk losing him.
A Slight Dip Doesn’t Change the Bigger Picture
Mayfield threw for 3,693 yards, 26 touchdowns, and 11 interceptions during the 2025 season. While those numbers represented a slight step back, they came during an injury-filled year for Tampa Bay’s offense.
Despite the circumstances, Mayfield continued to provide stability and leadership. One season doesn’t erase everything he has accomplished with the Buccaneers.
He also acknowledged last month that he had some uncertainty about his long-term future in Tampa Bay. That uncertainty could disappear quickly if both sides finalize an extension before training camp.
Summary
A contract worth $50 million per season may seem staggering, but that’s the reality of today’s NFL. Baker Mayfield has established himself as Tampa Bay’s franchise quarterback and one of the league’s respected veterans. With a dozen quarterbacks already earning at least that amount, the Buccaneers wouldn’t be overpaying Mayfield. They would simply be paying market value for the game’s most important position.
