The Tampa Bay Buccaneers will have a much different look at wide receiver in 2026. Mike Evans’ departure in free agency ended one of the greatest careers in franchise history and opened the door for a new generation of playmakers. It also marked the end of Sterling Shepard’s time in Tampa Bay.
After spending the last two seasons with the Buccaneers, Shepard remains unsigned as training camps begin around the NFL. The veteran receiver is still pursuing another opportunity to extend his career.
Buccaneers Turn the Page at Wide Receiver
Tampa Bay’s receiving corps is entering a new era. Emeka Egbuka and Jalen McMillan are expected to take on larger roles, while Chris Godwin will provide veteran leadership for one of the league’s youngest receiver groups.
That youth movement appears to have left Shepard without a spot on the roster. The Buccaneers chose not to re-sign the veteran this offseason, signaling their commitment to developing younger talent.
Shepard Gets Opportunity With Ravens
Although Shepard remains a free agent, another opportunity recently emerged.
According to Ravens reporter Brian Whacker, Shepard participated in a tryout with the Baltimore Ravens on Friday. He was one of four receivers invited to work out for the team.
Baltimore ultimately signed wide receiver Chris Moore instead. While Shepard wasn’t offered a contract, the workout shows teams remain interested in evaluating the veteran.
Shepard Was a Reliable Contributor in Tampa Bay
Shepard joined the Buccaneers in 2024 after quarterback Baker Mayfield advocated for bringing in his former Oklahoma teammate. The reunion gave Tampa Bay an experienced target who understood Mayfield’s playing style.
Over two seasons, Shepard appeared in 28 games, including the playoffs. He recorded 71 receptions for 705 yards and two touchdowns during that span. His final touchdown with Tampa Bay came during a 38-35 victory over the Seattle Seahawks in 2025.
While those numbers weren’t spectacular, Shepard provided dependable depth whenever his number was called.
What’s Next for Shepard?
The Buccaneers are focused on preparing for training camp, which begins on July 28. Shepard, meanwhile, will continue searching for another opportunity to continue his NFL career.
Given his experience and dependable hands, another team could still add him before the regular season begins. Whether that opportunity comes in Baltimore or elsewhere remains to be seen.
