Buccaneers beat writer Greg Auman recently provided an update on the situation, and it wasn’t the one many fans hoped to hear.
According to Auman, there has been “no word from either side on a potential Baker Mayfield (contract) discussion” ahead of training camp.
That doesn’t necessarily mean negotiations have ended. However, it does suggest there hasn’t been any significant progress as the team prepares to begin practicing.
Mayfield Has Made His Position Clear
Contract talks have lingered throughout the offseason, with previous reports indicating the two sides were not close to reaching an agreement.
Mayfield has also made it known he doesn’t want negotiations dragging into the season. Reports have indicated he plans to stop contract discussions once training camp begins, although it’s unclear whether that deadline is tied to player reporting or the first practice.
If no extension is reached before that point, both sides could table negotiations until after the 2026 season.
Playing Out the Final Year Remains an Option
As things stand, Mayfield is entering the final season of the three-year contract he signed with Tampa Bay. He is scheduled to earn a $10 million base salary in 2026 while continuing to lead the Buccaneers’ offense.
Although a new deal remains the preferred outcome, playing out the final year of his contract remains a realistic possibility if negotiations stay at a standstill.
That scenario would likely push any major contract decisions into next offseason.
