The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have plenty of questions at cornerback entering the 2026 season. Injuries limited several defensive backs throughout the offseason, creating opportunities for younger players to make an impression before training camp.
One player who took full advantage of that opportunity was undrafted rookie Ayden Garnes. After a strong offseason program, Garnes is beginning to generate legitimate buzz as a potential dark horse to make Tampa Bay’s 53-man roster.
Injuries Have Opened the Door
The Buccaneers’ cornerback room has been anything but settled this offseason. Injuries forced several players to miss valuable practice time, allowing Garnes to receive far more repetitions than many undrafted rookies typically see.
Bleacher Report’s Gary Davenport believes that opportunity could ultimately earn Garnes a roster spot.
“Garnes doesn’t have great size or blazing speed,” Davenport wrote. “But what he lacks in those categories he makes up for with experience, technique and ball skills. Sometimes, at the back end of the cornerback room you don’t want fast but raw. Teams want a smart player who won’t get caught out of position.”
That type of reliability often matters when coaches begin trimming the roster.
Garnes Turned Heads During the Offseason
Garnes didn’t simply benefit from extra practice reps. He made the most of them.
Sports Illustrated’s River Wells recently listed Garnes among the undrafted free agents who stood out throughout Tampa Bay’s offseason workouts.
“The Buccaneers have dealt with a large number of defensive back injuries so far this offseason,” Wells wrote. “Benjamin Morrison, Miles Killebrew, Keionte Scott, Chase Lucas and Kemon Hall are all players who’ve missed time due to injury at Tampa Bay’s offseason programs. That’s allowed Ayden Garnes, an undrafted free agent out of Arizona, to get more playing time this offseason. He’s deflected quite a few passes and covered his man well so far, and he’s competing in a room that could use some depth heading into 2026. We’ll have to see how Garnes does in training camp when the pads come on, but with the outside cornerbacks room in flux, he could make a play to stick on the roster if he competes well against some of Tampa Bay’s depth signings like Lucas and Hall.”
Training camp will provide Garnes with his biggest test yet, but he’s already positioned himself firmly in the roster conversation.
A Journey Through College Football
Garnes took an unconventional path to the NFL.
The Philadelphia native began his collegiate career at Duquesne before transferring to West Virginia for the 2024 season. He finished his college career at Arizona, where he started all 13 games during the 2025 season.
Garnes recorded 43 tackles, one interception, eight pass breakups, 1.5 tackles for loss, and two quarterback hurries during his lone season with the Wildcats. His performance earned him an invitation to the American Bowl following his senior year.
Garnes Has Already Made an Impact Off the Field
Long before he arrived in Tampa Bay, Garnes demonstrated the type of character every NFL team values.
While attending Duquesne in 2022, he donated bone marrow to help save the life of a woman in her 20s.
“For African Americans, it’s an under-one-percent chance that I was even going to be a match, so I really forgot about it,” Garnes stated after initially submitting a sample.
Months later, he learned he was a match and immediately agreed to undergo the procedure.
“I ended up doing the surgery in Boston on January 4th,” Garnes told KGUN-TV. “By the time I woke from my surgery, her surgery was already done.”
It’s a remarkable story that speaks volumes about the person behind the player.
Summary
Ayden Garnes entered the offseason as an overlooked undrafted free agent, but he won’t enter training camp that way. Injuries created an opportunity, and Garnes capitalized by consistently impressing coaches throughout the offseason. If he continues that momentum once the pads come on, don’t be surprised if the former Arizona standout earns a spot on the Buccaneers’ 53-man roster.
