Vea Asking to Be Traded From The Buccaneers Is No Big Deal

Monday it was reported that Tampa Bay Buccaneers star nose tackle Vita Vea has requested a trade. The eight year veteran is entering the final year of his contract and has been negotiating for a new deal. Recently, negotiations have stalled which led to the request.

The Bucs have built their defense around Vea. He has anchored top five run defenses in yards allowed in 6 of his 8 seasons. His presence is incredibly valuable.

So obviously, the idea of Vea being traded comes as very troubling. Any aspirations of making a postseason run pretty much go out the window if he were gone. He is undoubtedly one of the most important players on the team.

So what is my initial response to this big trade request news?

In a word: Meh

Again, that isn’t a reflection of how great Vea is. I just see it as a matter that Vea asking to be traded from the Buccaneers is no big deal.

The biggest reason for that is that Vea has no leverage here. Unless he is willing to sit out regular season games, then how much harm does it do that he is unhappy with his deal? He wouldn’t be the first player to play on a deal he doesn’t love and he won’t be the last.

The likely worst case scenario is that it turns Vea away from re-signing with the Bucs after this season. Contract negotiations can be difficult and sometimes feathers get ruffled. I would hate to see Vea leave after this year, but the reality is with guys like Baker Mayfield, Yaya Diaby and Cody Mauch all being up for new deals as well that this was always likely to be Vea’s last season in Tampa.

Buccaneers Hold The Leverage

It’s also important to note that the Buccaneers should have no incentive to trade Vea. In a year where they are looking to win their division and potentially make a run at a Super Bowl, why would they consider trading away one of their best players? Logically it makes no sense from the team perspective.

The only way that I could see the Bucs even considering a trade of Vea is if a team comes in with a gross over pay. For example, the Cincinnati Bengals traded the 10th overall pick in the draft from New York Giants star nose tackles Dexter Lawrence. A comparable return to this could motivate general manager Jason Licht to make a move.

Other than that, I just don’t see a path to a trade. Vea is a long time veteran and I don’t see him becoming a problem in the locker room. There is too much history there and too many teammates that he respects to up end their season.

More than anything, it’s jarring to see Vea request a trade. It’s always hard to watch a star player’s time end with their team and even more so when it’s seemingly not on good terms. If nothing else, it made me sad to read.

Big Picture

But in the big picture, this is likely much ado about nothing. It’s hard to see a pathway to Vea being traded (even before you get into the conversation about the cost of acquiring a 32 year old nose tackle).

It was a negotiation tactic to try and get a contract extension and I’ll be surprised if anything more than a small pay bump comes from all this noise.
