JT’s Three Most Logical Landing Spots In A Vita Vea Trade

Last night it was reported that Tampa Bay Buccaneers star nose tackle Vita Vea had requested a trade. This coming after negotiations for an extension had stalled. The eight year veteran wants a long term extension and if the Bucs won’t give it then he wants to find someone who will.

This is a complicated conversation of player age, talent and finances. There are several layers to any Vea deal, which is why the Bucs have been hesitant to extend him. However, for this conversation I only want to look at the football aspect of it.

The most logical place for Vea to play next year is of course the Bucs. The defense is built around him, there is a ton of familiarity and he’s a franchise icon in Tampa. But if a team were to offer a gross overpay, then it’s possible that he could be traded elsewhere.

If that were the case, here are the three most logical landing spots in a Vita Vea trade.

Buffalo Bills

It feels like it’s been Super Bowl or bust in Buffalo for the last few years. Unfortunately, they just haven’t been able to get over that hump. Part of that is their bottom five run defense in the NFL last year.

Vea would obviously improve that in a big way. Remember that Vea has anchored a top five run defense in yards allowed in six of his eight career seasons in the NFL. Even if the Bills defense didn’t rise to those heights, Vea would still drastically improve them upfront.

We know that Josh Allen is an MVP quarterback who can lead the offense to the post season. However, in January things get tougher and more physical. Vea could be the missing piece that finally leads them to the promised land.

Chicago Bears

The Bears took a major step forward under first year head coach Ben Johnson in 2025. They won the NFL North and are looking to build on that success in year two. However, they have question marks on their defensive line.

Chicago ranked bottom five in yards allowed and yards allowed per carry last season. Similarly to the Bills, Vea would drastically change that. And when you play in a conference that has Jhamyr Gibbs, Bijan Robinson and Saquan Barkley then you need to be able to stop the run.

It’s also worth noting that quarterback Caleb Williams has three years left on his rookie deal. This might be the time to go all in and capitalize on that cap situation.

San Francisco 49ers

The 49ers run defense wasn’t awful last year, but it wasn’t great either. With an addition like Vea then it could take that unit to the next level. An intriguing thought for a team who is trying to capitalize on this championship window.

Over the last several years, San Francisco has been to the Super Bowl a few times but haven’t been able to seal the deal. Now many of those star players like George Kittle, Trent Williams and Christian McCaffery are nearing the twilight of their careers. It might be now or never for this group.

If the 49ers really want to go all in then this is the type of move to do it. It’s also worth noting that the team drafts extremely poorly in the first round under this front office, so trading that pick might not be the biggest deal for them.
