Tristan Wirfs Suffers Hamstring Injury as Buccaneers Open Training Camp

0

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers opened training camp with an unexpected injury concern. All-Pro left tackle Tristan Wirfs was absent from practice after suffering a hamstring injury during conditioning tests.

The Buccaneers hope the issue proves minor. However, any injury involving one of the NFL’s premier offensive tackles deserves close attention.

Todd Bowles Provides Update on Wirfs

Head coach Todd Bowles revealed Wirfs tweaked his hamstring during Tuesday’s running tests. The team immediately held him out of practice for treatment.

He tweaked [his hamstring] in the running test, so we left him inside to get treatment,Bowles said. “Right now, I’m not sure (when he’ll return). I’ll know more today. I would hope it’s not long, but we’ll see.

The injury comes after a frustrating 2025 season for Wirfs. He missed five games while continuing his recovery from offseason knee surgery.

The Buccaneers will undoubtedly exercise caution with their franchise left tackle. Soft tissue injuries can linger if players return too quickly.

Tampa Bay Can’t Afford Another Injury-Plagued Season

Wirfs anchors one of the league’s better offensive lines when healthy. His presence remains critical to protecting quarterback Baker Mayfield and establishing the running game.

Tampa Bay battled injuries across the roster throughout 2025. Those setbacks played a major role in the team’s late-season collapse and playoff absence.

Keeping cornerstone players healthy remains one of the organization’s biggest priorities entering the 2026 season.

Vita Vea Also Sidelined

Bowles also addressed defensive tackle Vita Vea, who missed practice after tweaking his back during Tuesday’s conditioning tests.

The Buccaneers consider Vea day-to-day as training camp begins.

Bowles also dismissed any suggestion that Tampa Bay has discussed trading its star defensive tackle.

We have not even discussed it,Bowles said. “We don’t let the outside noise affect what we’re doing right now. We’re getting ready for camp. We’re trying to build camaraderie and chemistry, and we’re getting ready each day, and that’s all we do.

Vea requested a trade earlier this week, creating one of training camp’s biggest storylines. He reported with the team’s veterans on Wednesday but watched Thursday’s practice from the sideline.

Whether his absence was injury-related, contract-related, or both remains unclear. Bowles’ comments suggest the team remains focused on football rather than outside speculation.

Summary

The Buccaneers entered training camp hoping for a healthy start. Instead, two of their biggest stars opened camp on the sideline. Tampa Bay will hope both Wirfs and Vea return quickly as preparations for the 2026 season continue.
