Baker Mayfield finally addressed his contract situation on Thursday. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback didn’t hide his disappointment over failed extension negotiations.
Mayfield confirmed he set a deadline before training camp. Once that deadline passed, he shifted his entire focus to football.
Mayfield Explains Why Negotiations Fell Apart
Mayfield enters the final season of the three-year, $100 million contract he signed in March 2024. His current average salary ranks outside the NFL’s highest-paid quarterbacks.
“I wanted a deal done, and set the deadline, and told them it was going to be all ball after that. And I did mean that,” Mayfield said. “And I don’t know if they thought I was just going to take some of the offers that they gave. But I’m at the point of my career and understanding what I brought to this franchise — one, I’m very, very grateful for the chance they gave me, do not get me wrong on that. But I also really know what I’ve brought to this franchise leadership-wise and even play-wise. It’s been some of the best years of my career. And I think it’s only going to trend upwards. Just feeling comfortable in feeling that.”
“So, disappointing in that regard to not have … to feel disrespected a little bit. And that’s really the disappointing part, to feel undervalued after thinking you’ve earned it.”
Mayfield made it clear the issue isn’t simply about money. He believes his leadership and production have earned a stronger commitment.
Quarterback Believes He Has Earned Top-Tier Money
According to ESPN, Tampa Bay’s reported offer fell well below the annual value Mayfield seeks. ESPN also reported the sides remained far apart during negotiations.
“This is not a ‘poor me’ thing,” Mayfield said. “There’s a lot of other people who have it way worse off. But I can sit here and look at other quarterbacks and peers, and evaluate myself based on that and put myself in certain categories that, I deserve to be compensated for that. I think I’m a franchise quarterback. I’ve been told I’m a franchise quarterback. It’s been said publicly from ownership down, here. So to not have a deal done is very disappointing.”
Mayfield has consistently played like one of the league’s better quarterbacks since arriving in Tampa Bay. He helped stabilize the franchise following Tom Brady’s retirement.
A Pivotal Season Awaits
Mayfield joined the Buccaneers before the 2023 season on a one-year, $4 million contract. He quickly exceeded expectations and earned consecutive Pro Bowl selections.
He also helped lead Tampa Bay to back-to-back NFC South titles in 2023 and 2024. Last season ended differently after injuries contributed to an 8-9 finish and a missed postseason.
Now, Mayfield enters a contract year with plenty to prove. A strong 2026 campaign could strengthen his position when negotiations resume after the season.
Reality Check
The Buccaneers are making a massive mistake, and it could become one of the organization’s most expensive decisions. Offering Baker Mayfield just two years below $50 million annually is insulting. He has resurrected his career in Tampa Bay and delivered exactly what the franchise needed after Tom Brady’s retirement. He’s proven he’s a franchise quarterback, yet the Buccaneers continue treating him like an also-ran. If Mayfield delivers another Pro Bowl season, Tampa Bay won’t gain leverage. The price will only climb, and the franchise could ultimately pay far more or lose its quarterback altogether. That outcome would be entirely self-inflicted.
