I just finished watching Baker Mayfield’s press conference. By now, I’m sure you’ve either seen it or heard what he had to say.
The takeaway was pretty clear: Baker feels disrespected by the Buccaneers for not giving him a franchise quarterback contract—something north of $50 million per year—and for not extending him beyond this season.
I was all set to write a scathing article blasting the Bucs, Jason Licht, and the Glazer family for not getting a deal done. Then I stopped, took a deep breath, and put the keyboard down.
The truth is, we’re not guaranteed anything beyond today. Sure, it’s easy to imagine Baker having a phenomenal season and leaving in free agency. That’s one possible outcome.
But it’s only one of many.
There’s also a scenario where he doesn’t play well enough to justify the kind of long-term contract he’s seeking. There are countless possibilities, and none of us knows how this story ends.
What we do know is this: Baker Mayfield is the Buccaneers’ starting quarterback today.
Sometimes, as fans, we’re so passionate about what we think is going to happen that we don’t leave room for the opposite to happen.
So I’m going to take my own advice. I’m going to cheer for whoever suits up for the Buccaneers on opening day and throughout the season.
Worrying about what might happen won’t change what does happen.
