The Tampa Bay Buccaneers entered the offseason knowing their defense needed a significant boost. After a disappointing 2025 campaign, the team invested heavily in improving the unit through free-agent additions and the 2026 NFL Draft.
While first-round pick Rueben Bain Jr. is expected to receive plenty of attention, another rookie defender could quickly become an important piece of Tampa Bay’s defense. Fourth-round cornerback Keionte Scott is already showing why the Buccaneers believed he was worth selecting.
Todd Bowles Impressed By Scott’s Ability To Process The Defense
Scott enters Tampa Bay after playing alongside Bain at Miami, where he developed into a versatile defensive back. During his college career, Scott recorded 13 tackles for loss and five sacks while primarily playing the nickel position.
That role could be where Scott begins his NFL career, but the Buccaneers are already testing his versatility. During training camp, the rookie has taken reps at outside cornerback, safety and nickel.
For a young defensive back, learning multiple positions can be overwhelming. However, Scott has quickly impressed head coach Todd Bowles with his ability to process information and execute assignments.
“For him, it’s been great because he went yesterday for the first day after missing the whole spring,” Bowles stated. “He played corner, he played nickel and he played safety. To process that kind of information and come out on your first day, then come out today and do what he’s been doing has been phenomenal to see. It really helps him learn the defense, moving around and playing different spots. So, his mind is outstanding and we just look for him to keep getting better.”
Buccaneers Believe Scott’s Intelligence Can Accelerate His Development
Bowles was also asked whether Scott’s football intelligence comes from natural instincts or preparation. The Buccaneers head coach believes it is a combination of both.
“I think it’s both. It’s all of that, plus the coaches he had formerly,” Bowles stated. “It’s a lot of credit to them too – the guys at Miami and the guys at his high school – because he came in here like that. We can’t take credit for that after only two days of practice in training camp. He prepares, he understands, he asks questions and he’s very bright.”
That type of mental ability could give Scott an advantage as he competes for playing time. Defensive backs are often forced to make split-second decisions, and understanding the defense can be just as important as physical talent.
The Buccaneers already have several young defensive backs they are developing, but Scott’s versatility gives him a chance to carve out a role early. His ability to play multiple positions could make him valuable in Bowles’ defensive scheme.
Training camp is still in its early stages, but Scott is already proving he has the mental tools needed to succeed at the next level. If his physical development matches his football intelligence, the Buccaneers may have found another impactful piece for their defense.
