The Tampa Bay Buccaneers are approaching the end of their first week of training camp, but one major storyline has surrounded the team throughout the opening days.
All-Pro left tackle Tristan Wirfs has been noticeably absent from practice.
With much of the offseason attention focused on contract situations across the roster, Wirfs’ absence has not received as much attention as it normally would. However, the Buccaneers now have clarity on why their star offensive lineman has been sidelined.
According to head coach Todd Bowles, Wirfs suffered an injury before the start of training camp.
Todd Bowles Provides Update on Tristan Wirfs’ Injury
During his media availability, Bowles explained that Wirfs suffered an issue during the team’s running test before camp officially began.
“He tweaked something in the running test,” Bowles said.
When asked how much time Wirfs could miss, Bowles confirmed the injury involved Wirfs’ hamstring but admitted the timeline remained unclear.
“Right now, I’m not sure. I’ll know more today. I would hope it’s not long, but we’ll see. Tristan’s is a hamstring.”
The Buccaneers still do not know the severity of Wirfs’ injury. However, the repeated use of the word “tweak” has become a frustrating theme around the team.
Tampa Bay has dealt with multiple players missing time due to minor injuries throughout the offseason and now into training camp. While some issues are unavoidable, maintaining health remains one of the biggest priorities for a team with legitimate playoff expectations.
While Wirfs remains sidelined, Benjamin Chukwuma and Justin Skule have been rotating reps with the first-team offense at left tackle.
Wirfs was not seen during Tampa Bay’s first few practices. However, he returned to the field as a spectator on Day 3 while wearing a sleeve on his right leg.
Tristan Wirfs Looking to Avoid Another Injury-Plagued Season
The timing of Wirfs’ injury is not ideal after he endured the most injury-filled season of his NFL career in 2025.
Wirfs missed the first three games of last season after undergoing offseason knee surgery to address an issue that had bothered him during the 2024 season.
Starting the year without one of the NFL’s best offensive tackles created an immediate challenge for Tampa Bay. However, the Buccaneers managed to survive until Wirfs returned to the lineup.
Unfortunately, his injury issues continued throughout the season.
Wirfs later missed Week 14 against the New Orleans Saints because of an oblique injury. He also missed the final game of the season against the Carolina Panthers because of a toe injury.
After missing five games in 2025, Wirfs is hoping to avoid another season where his availability becomes a concern.
Getting Healthy Now Could Benefit the Buccaneers Later
The Buccaneers should not rush Wirfs back simply to get him through training camp.
A healthy Tristan Wirfs is far more valuable in December and January than he is during August practices.
Chukwuma and Skule can handle increased opportunities during camp and preseason action. However, neither player can replace what Wirfs brings once the regular season begins.
Protecting Baker Mayfield’s blind side remains one of the most important responsibilities on the roster. If Tampa Bay wants its offense to reach its full potential, it needs its All-Pro left tackle healthy when the games matter most.
The best-case scenario for the Buccaneers is simple: allow Wirfs to recover fully now, so he can anchor the offensive line for the entire season.
