The contract dispute between Baker Mayfield and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers appears to be taking another troubling turn. What began as difficult negotiations now seems to be creating real tension between the quarterback and the organization.
During an appearance on “The Pat McAfee Show” Friday, ESPN’s Adam Schefter revealed the relationship has become increasingly strained. According to Schefter, frustration exists on both sides after Mayfield publicly criticized the team’s contract approach.
“It almost feels like it’s Baker vs. the team,” Schefter said. “Baker’s not happy with them. They’re not happy with the way he spoke about the organization.”
Mayfield did not hide his disappointment on Thursday. He admitted feeling “disrespected” by Tampa Bay’s contract offers as he enters the final season of his current deal. He also revealed the Buccaneers never offered more than a two-year contract. That left him believing the organization lacked confidence in him.
The Buccaneers likely hoped those frustrations would remain behind closed doors. Instead, the disagreement became one of the league’s biggest storylines. Public comments rarely help negotiations, especially when emotions are already running high.
At the same time, Mayfield has built his career proving doubters wrong. Feeling slighted has often brought out his best football. If he believes Tampa Bay undervalued him, it is hardly surprising he chose to voice those frustrations.
For now, there appears to be no immediate resolution. Mayfield already announced he will not negotiate once training camp begins. Unless something changes, he will play the 2026 season on his current contract. His long-term future in Tampa Bay remains far from certain.
