The Tampa Bay Buccaneers know a healthy defense will be essential if they hope to return to the playoffs. Unfortunately, one of their young defensive backs is already dealing with another injury concern.
Cornerback Benjamin Morrison continues to battle a lingering hamstring injury during training camp. Head coach Todd Bowles provided an update that raised more questions than answers.
Todd Bowles Offers Honest Assessment
According to FOX Sports’ Greg Auman, Bowles revealed Morrison’s current injury involves the opposite leg from the hamstring issue that limited him last season.
“Todd Bowles said corner Benjamin Morrison’s lingering hamstring injury is not the same leg as the one sidelining him last year. Asked if that’s better or worse than if it were the same hamstring. ‘Remains to be seen,'” Auman posted on Twitter.
Bowles’ response highlights the uncertainty surrounding Morrison’s recovery. While it isn’t a re-injury of the same hamstring, another soft-tissue issue is never an encouraging development.
Patience Will Be Critical
Morrison appeared in 10 games last season before injuries slowed his progress. He entered 2026 expected to compete for a much larger role in Tampa Bay’s secondary.
That opportunity should not come at the expense of his health.
Hamstring injuries have a reputation for lingering. Players often believe they’re ready before discovering the injury hasn’t fully healed during live action.
The Buccaneers would be wise to remain cautious with Morrison. Missing practice time in August is far preferable to losing him for meaningful games later this season.
If Tampa Bay allows the injury to heal completely, Morrison still has plenty of time to make an impact once the regular season begins.
