The Tampa Bay Buccaneers are counting on their young secondary to take a major step forward in 2026.
Tampa Bay’s defensive backs finished around the middle of the league last season. The unit will look to improve despite losing veteran cornerback Jamel Dean and lacking significant depth.
The Buccaneers chose youth over major offseason additions in the secondary. Other than drafting Miami cornerback Keionte Scott, Tampa Bay largely trusted its existing group to improve.
That decision puts more responsibility on players like Jacob Parrish, who could be entering a much larger role.
Tykee Smith Expects Big Things From Jacob Parrish
With Scott potentially taking over nickel duties, Parrish could move outside and become one of Tampa Bay’s starting boundary corners.
Although Todd Bowles has not revealed his exact plans for the secondary, safety Tykee Smith believes Parrish is ready for a strong sophomore season.
“I think Jacob Parrish is going to have a really big year for us,” Smith said following training camp practice.
Smith’s confidence comes after Parrish showed plenty of promise during his rookie campaign.
The former third-round pick played all 17 games for Tampa Bay last season. He started five contests and finished with 76 tackles, including seven tackles for loss.
Parrish also recorded seven passes defended, three quarterback hits, two interceptions, and two sacks. His versatility quickly became one of his biggest strengths.
Parrish Faces Increased Expectations in Year Two
A strong rookie season created excitement, but the expectations will be much higher now.
If Scott eventually takes over the nickel role, Parrish will have to prove he can handle outside responsibilities. That transition could become one of the biggest storylines for Tampa Bay’s secondary during training camp.
Parrish has spent much of camp working at nickel, showing the Buccaneers still have flexibility with their defensive back alignments.
However, the team’s offseason approach suggests Parrish could have a major role on the outside. He could join Zyon McCollum and fellow second-year cornerback Benjamin Morrison as Tampa Bay’s primary outside options.
Buccaneers Need Their Young Secondary to Deliver
For the Buccaneers to return as one of the NFL’s top defenses, their young corners must develop quickly.
Morrison’s health will be critical after injuries limited him during his rookie season. McCollum must also become more consistent after showing flashes throughout his first two years.
Parrish now has the opportunity to prove he belongs among the league’s better young cornerbacks. If he can maintain his rookie production while handling a larger role, Tampa Bay’s secondary could become a major strength.
The Buccaneers are betting on their young defensive backs. If that gamble pays off, it could play a major role in determining how far this team goes in 2026.
