The Tampa Bay Buccaneers received the kind of walkoff no team wants to see during training camp practice Wednesday.
Tez Johnson Exits With Groin Injury
Second-year wide receiver Tez Johnson, who has been one of the early standouts of training camp, left the field midway through practice after suffering a groin injury.
Head coach Todd Bowles confirmed after practice that Johnson was dealing with the injury. The severity is not currently known.
Johnson has impressed throughout camp as he looks to build on a promising rookie season and earn a larger role in Tampa Bay’s offense. His sudden exit adds another injury concern to a position group already dealing with multiple issues.
David Sills Also Leaves Practice Early
Johnson was not the only Buccaneers receiver who failed to finish practice.
David Sills, the veteran free-agent addition from the Atlanta Falcons, slowly made his way to the sideline during practice and stopped participating.
Sills joined Tampa Bay this offseason and is competing for a role in a crowded receiver room that features Chris Godwin, Jalen McMillan, Emeka Egbuka, and Johnson.
Buccaneers Managing Multiple Receiver Injuries
The timing of the injuries comes as the Buccaneers reach the one-week mark of training camp.
Jalen McMillan has missed the past two practices because of a banged-up knee, with Bowles providing clarification on his status after practice. Meanwhile, Egbuka missed Tuesday’s practice and was limited Wednesday because of lower-body soreness.
The Buccaneers are not required to issue injury reports during training camp in August. This leaves the team without an official injury designation system until the regular season begins.
For a receiver group expected to play a major role in Tampa Bay’s offense, maintaining health will be a key storyline as the Buccaneers continue through training camp.
