The contract standoff between Vita Vea and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers appears to be moving farther from a resolution. According to Rick Stroud of the Tampa Bay Times, Vea’s agent no longer believes the two sides will reach common ground on a new deal.
“I just don’t see it ending in anything but a trade at this point,” Vea’s agent said via Stroud.
Agent Believes Trade Is Becoming the Only Option
Vea has continued his hold-in during training camp while pursuing a contract extension before the final year of his current deal. The Buccaneers have yet to engage in extension talks with his representatives, creating an increasingly tense situation.
Vea’s camp has maintained that the veteran defensive tackle will not play without either a new contract or a trade. Tampa Bay, however, has refused to budge and continues allowing Vea to stay away from practice as the team prepares for Week 1.
Buccaneers Continue Rejecting Trade Interest
Although multiple teams have reportedly inquired about Vea’s availability, the Buccaneers have declined every offer. Despite the growing frustration surrounding the negotiations, Tampa Bay has shown no willingness to move one of its most important defensive players.
Vea’s current contract averages $17.75 million per season, making him the NFL’s 19th-highest-paid interior defensive lineman. He is scheduled to earn a $17 million base salary during the 2026 season.
Vea Has Been a Defensive Cornerstone
The Buccaneers selected Vea in the first round of the 2018 NFL Draft before exercising his fifth-year option. He later signed a four-year, $71 million extension, and the team created roughly $9 million in cap space by converting much of his 2023 salary into a signing bonus.
Vea continued producing at a high level in 2025 while appearing in all 17 games. He finished the season with 34 tackles, seven tackles for loss, 4.5 sacks, two pass breakups, and one fumble recovery.
